Question about proper weight

So, I've been heavy lifting for about a month now, and I can definitely feel and see a difference in my strength, but I've never gotten DOMS. And I know that's an improper way to measure how well you're doing, but everyone seems to be getting it. So, I'm wondering how high my weights should be. I've been coasting doing squats between 70 and 80lbs. Last night I went up to 85 and it KILLED me. I did manage to complete my sets, but barely. Is this how I should be feeling every time? Or should it be more comfortable at a slightly lighter weight?

As time goes on it will get harder, you'll need to rest more between sets, and it will be more exhilarating when you make the new weight

Don't worry about whether you get DOMS or not. I don't really get it, what I do get is more along the lines of achey joints.

You should be striving to add weight every session. Are you doing that?

DOMS is a very individual thing, and depending on how conditioned you are and so forth (and I really think genetics have to do with it also), you may or may not experience it.

I really only got DOMS when I first started lifting. That first week was brutal for me. I don't really get it anymore except very occasionally, but I've stuck with compound lifting 3x/weekly religiously so my muscles are just used to it now, I guess.
