Help please - confused!

Good morning folks! I'm in Hertfordshire, an energetic age 60 female, 123lbs (the most I've ever weighed), 5ft 0in. I zumba once a week and power walk for around 60-75 mins a week. I've been doing Slimming World but not getting anywhere so thought I'd try MFP - it recommends I stick to 1200 cals a day but I'm hungry (been doing it for a month) No problem Mon-Fri, weekends are v.hard! Not got loads to lose but want to get back to 112lbs (though no rush). Any advice please?

As you are petite with not much to lose 1200 could be the right number for you (hope you are eating back exercise calories though....).
Have you set you weight loss goal to half a pound a week? That would probably be the right number for you.
You might like to think of averaging your calories out over a week rather than trying for the same number every day? I do 5:2 fasting so I'm doing an extreme form of that!!
Really though a lot of it comes down to food choices - lean protein, veggies, berries, salads etc will give you a lot more volume to eat and keep you feeling more full for longer.0 -
Veggies!!
You can eat a wheelbarrow full of veggies and still be under 1200!
although matching them with brown rice or wholewheat pasta and a little skinless chicken will make you feel fuller.
don't cut out the things you love though... just eat less of them.0 -
Thanks. I'm eating reasonably healthy but think I may not be eating right, and need the protein-carbs-veg/fruit balance. Will persevere! (under active thyroid too, but well controlled so shouldn't make a difference).0

I'm sure the thyroid condition doesn't help.
I find that I bulk out my evening meals with lots and lots of vegetables and I feel quite satisfied. I do eat complex carbs so brown rice, brown pasta, brown bread.
For example, when I make bolognese I use less meat and blend a load of vegetables up to throw in the mix. I do chicken with herbs with loads of vegetables and couscous.
As already mentioned, make sure you do eat back your exercise calories, I didn't and ended up stalling until I readjusted.0 -
I reckon you could get away with eating a bit more. A little calculation (using Henry) tells me that your daily energy expenditure should be about 1810kcal. I personally find 1500kcal much easier to cope with than 1200kcal and that would still give you a 350kcal deficit - a bit more than half pound a week weight loss, theoretically.0

I haven't been eating back my exercise cals. Zumba apparently burns up 300-400 cals and my power walking probably another 300 cals, so perhaps I should add an extra 100 cals a day. I thought I would lose quicker if I didn't use them but I think I'm wrong there as well! (Not very good at this - I used to be such a skinny minnie although I ate tons, had trouble keeping my weight up to 7st!)0

how do you calculate "using Henry?" (see message above). (appreciating all your help guys, what a nice bunch you are)0

Hiya, I too am going to a Slimming World group and so far I've not done to badly (a steady 1lb a week) but I too find it difficult at the weekend.
I'm 5ft 1inch tall and currently weight 134lbs so I'm pretty much in the same situation0
