Yeah - I rode 86 miles yesterday in 6 hours....preparing for my first century next weekend. I finally feel that regardless I'll be able to finish the ride.

Is a goal of 7 ok for a first century with elevation? (most of my training rides have had little elevation gain)

86 miles! That is an awesome ride. 7 hr century is a good goal. I am training for my first century (this fall) and I am hoping to complete it in 8 hrs.....let us know how you do.

Best of luck with your century - you are ahead of me as I'm only up to 70 miles so not yet ready for the big one.

Seven hours is what I'm hoping for as well - just stuck making a decision between using my hybrid for comfort or road bike for extra speed.
I'm finding that heavy traffic is just as bad for dragging down my average speed as the hills.....

Thanks - I'm also seeking breakfast advice for tomorrow's century. I normally don't eat until I've been up for a couple hours but must eat before riding. Suggestions?

    I'm thinking oatmeal?

Oatmeal is a great choice. Add some butter and/or nuts for good fats, and a little fruit on there. Perfect. (Tip: I prefer the steal-cut, which takes forever to cook. If you have a ride cooker with a timer function, you can have it ready for you when you wake up.)

Thanks for all the words of wisdom and encouragement! The ride was brutal - incredible. Even though Utah is a desert environment you wouldn't have known last Sat. It downpoured the first 30 miles. After huddling with 20+ other freezing women in the bathroom at the park (oh yeah...it was 50 degrees out) it stopped raining for about the next 20. Then rain....then HAIL over 5 mile pass! Over the course I had 2 flats (one that tore my outer tire at about mile 80, but rode the rest with a pooch in my tire anyway.

I'm so happy I finished & made my goals - 1) finish 2) not be last and 3) 7 hrs of riding time.....I did 6:56. I'm looking into another one this summer....with better weather :)

It took me 11 hours to get through my first century. I blogged about it here: http://escapefrommc.wordpress.com/2013/04/24/my-first-century-long-read/

Great Job! If you can survive that you can survive anything. In fact, if you like rain and sub 50 degree weather come on up to western Washington State. That's a typical ride for us!
  • I did my first century in 7:45, funny thing is I was fine for the first 70 miles in 4:24, but then I took over 3 hours for the last 30 miles, due to cramps, sore butt, and heat. The next year I was more prepared and rode the same century in 5:45. Exactly 2 hours less than the previous year. Best advice I can give, take breaks when you need them, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate and don't forget to have fun and enjoy your ride.

    Good Luck
