Advice from experienced cyclists

I'm looking into starting cycling again, I haven't rode a bike for over 10 years. I have been looking at a hard tail bike and also a road bike. Where I live there are quite a lot of pot holes in the roads where I will be riding, would the hard tail bike be more suited to this, or would I be able to ride a road bike with out too much difficulty.
Thanks in advance

Owning a hard tail and road bike, and, like you, not used them in any context or anger in nearly 10 years, I love the MTB, but where the roads are bad, I wouldn't risk using my road bike. It's more preservation of the wheels!!!0

The thing to do is to look down the road a little (no pun intended) and see where you think that you may be. Where do you want to ride, only on the road, on trails too, more rugged terrain? Do you have the desire to get 2 bikes right now? If you want to ride mainly on the road, and the conditions are not suitable to 23mm tires, then you may think about a cyclocross bike. With a more road oriented riding position, the more rugged frame and ability to run up to 32mm tires, you can have a single bike that suits your purposes. Throw on a set of knobbies and you are ready for a little trail riding.0

I have a sort-of crossover bike that I built from spares !
Technically it is a mountain frame - hence comfortable, with rigid forks, disk brakes (great in the rain) and Michelin City tires. (26x1.85).
The riding position is relaxed, it is fast enough and the city tires roll really fast.
No suspension and mid-high range components mean that it is reasonable light and I have no issue keeping up with club rides on it.....0 -
For road riding you will probably be more comfortable and be able to ride longer on an actual road bike. Instead of 23's use 25's? Or start with an upright hybrid with 32cc tires. A hardtail mtn bike might be a tad unwieldy for road riding.0
