what goes through your head when riding

So aside from the basics (route/speed/distance/etc)....what are you thinking about when you're on your bike.

Normally on a road ride, I'm thinking about songs/movies...weekend plans...boobs :)....honey do list...bike stuff....although for some random reason today my thoughts got rather dark :( ...on the mountain bike...its pretty much about the ride, scenery, new bike parts, and what to eat/drink when I'm done...

So what runs through your head.

How this would be easier with an engine/motor?
How much would it cost to add a motor?
How much time could be saved with said motor?
    Why cant it stop raining?
    Is it ever not windy?
    What's for Tea?
    WTF!
    Shut up legs.
    Blimey he was close.
Why can't i live there? i'd be home by now!
What would i buy with a million pounds?
Did i marry the right one?
Am i happy, would i change anything?
Could i make it look like an accident!?

I listen to audiobooks, which can be distracting. Many times though, I find myself day dreaming about the next ride.

One reason I ride is to clear my head, and I largely succeed. Thoughts are reduced to the here and now: weather, road conditions, etc. Riding in a very rural, secluded location with little traffic helps.

    Watch out for the root
Oh *kitten* I didn't know that rock was there
I am riding really close to the ravine with roots all of the place
I think I need to slow down

I mountain bike so I am constantly looking ahead on the trail and thinking of my next move,

    on the roadie:
    songs
    sorting out thoughts
watching for wildlife (usually just see road kill)
cursing at my nerve damage in my arm
wishing Kansas knew it was OK to make shoulders on the roads
hoping 2 water bottles is enough
    sick of wind.
damn... my legs are looking nice

    on the mtn bike
    watching the trail.
who the hell knew Kansas has cactus
Who the EFF littered on MY trail?!
oh ****.. don't fall into that mess.

I bike just about every morning into work...

    Rides In:
    - FML it's early...
    - Why is that runner swerving all over the path?
    - I'm dinging my bell to let you know I'm coming, not to get you to move out of the way
    - Shutup legs, keep the ride under 20min!

    Rides Home:
    - So...hungry
    - List of things I need to do that now
    - Dinner ideas

    Long rides:
    - Constantly watching out and thinking about what the cars are doing...way too many accidents in this city
    - How I cannot wait to do this exact ride when I get my Cannondale at the end of the season (graduation gift to myself!)
    - Shutup legs...

    On the ride out:
    Wow! What a beautiful day.
I could ride forever on a day like this.
Hey, moron! Three feet is the law!
Anybody up for a sing along?
I should do the extra 10 mile loop at the end.

    On the ride in:
    Only 20 miles to go.
    Is my pull over yet?
    Only 10 miles to go.
I probably shouldn't have done that sprint 15 miles back.
    Only 5 miles to go.
What the...? My turn to pull again?
    Shut up legs.
    Only 4 miles to go.
    Shut up legs.
    Only 3 miles to go.
    Shut up legs.
    Only 2 miles to go.
    Shut up legs.
    Only 1 mile to go.
    Shut up legs.
Dang! Who thought one mile could last so long?
    Finally done!
What a great ride! Let's do it again!

I try not to think about anything important. The ride is a bit of an escape. Since I live where I grew up, I know a number of people who live where I normally ride. I like to check out their places and see what's new. It's nice to see some wildlife on the way. A perfect ride is zen like.

Save the fart for the bottom of the next hill.
I can overtake that bus again.
I'm going to own that ride in front of me.
There is no way that rider is getting back past me now.
Shall I take a detour to conquer that really big hill... get real!!!
She's got nice legs in that car. I bet I can catch her up before the next set of lights.
Look cool, don't let them know you are dying on the inside.

I ride only on dedicated bike paths: no cars, just the occaisionaly mindless walker, horse rider, or big ungainly group of aggressive riders trying to pass.
I pretty much think of everything. I keep thinking about the girl I should have married 13 years ago, but didn't because I wasn't that bright. I wonder how my life would be different if I had studied something else, or applied myself more in school. I think about leaving my current job, but realize i haven't had a call back for an interview since November. I wonder if I could have seen what my life was going to be like in 2013 in 1985, if I would have attacked life in a different manner.

    In town/City:

    What speed am I doing?
    Will that light change?
Will that person cross in front?
    What's that car doing?
Can I fit through that gap?

    In the countryside:
    Keep-the-cadence-high, keep-the-cadence-high
  • ooOOOOooooOOOOOOoooooOOOOooooOOOOOOOOooooo

    heels down
    pump here
    wheels up
    swooosh
    pump, pump, pump
    take this last jump big

    whoot whoot!!!

then there's the downhill afterglow :D

When mountain biking... I focus on the trail, the scenery, making enough noise to warn bears, and how it is the most awesome way to spend my time.

Annnnnnddd the occasional WHEN WILL THIS DAMN CLIMB BE OVER.

If my mind wanders I WILL (and I know this for a fact) crash. This is one of the reasons I love mountain biking so much because you are truly in the moment, and not having stupid random thoughts about the past and future.

I ride with my boyfriend, but he's the more experienced one so he usually rides ahead and sets the pace. Mostly I'm just focusing on keeping up with him, not running over small children (exact thought every time: WHY ARE THERE SO MANY ILL-BEHAVED ONES ON TRAILS?!) or slow walkers with headphones in (sometimes I get a sick pleasure from yelling "ON YOUR LEFT" extra loudly at them and then picking up my pace so I startle them when I zoom past), and the GNATS. Oh the gnats.

    Depends on the pace:

<16 - boy this is slow, I'm bored, no one cool to talk to, might as well look at the scenery
~17 - this is fun, already talked to everyone, might as well look at the scenery
~18 - this is serious, got to save my energy, tough to keep up a conversation, might as well look at the scenery
~19 - this is stupid, why am putting myself through this, talk, I can't even breath, might as well look at the scenery
    >20 - boy I picked the wrong ride, damned hammerheads, crap I'm off the back, might as well look at the scenery

The next fifty feet and that car up ahead and the stupid thing it might do.

Almost always this! City riding lends itself to that. If i'm out on a trail, then I start thinking about the past week, or brainstorming new ideas.

Everything imaginable goes through my mind as ride lots of (What I call noise) mindless meanderings of the mind over nonsense.

But, I certainly think about what I am doing as well: peddle peddle peddle; rhythm, rhythm rhythm; gently thrust the peddle; save some energy for later; on short rides I don't save anything. I just find a good smooth road and pump it.

    On descents:
What a beautiful day it is
Why don't I get out on my bike more often
The blooming vegetation smells so good
Let's see if I can get thru this section without bodily harm
Bummer, I forgot which line to take thru the granite...is it to the right or straight thru
Lucky, i picked the correct line, phew!
I narrowly escaped that technically section...breath
    Look at all the critters
I'm feeling pretty good for not being in bike shape

    On climbs back home:
    I'm starting to sweat
Oh, I can feel it in my legs
I wish I could go faster than the bugs
    My breathing is rather loud
    I hate bugs
Can't wait to get over this hill
Maybe I need to ride more; don't like to feel so out of shape when riding
One of these days I'll make this tight, steep, switch back!
Can't wait to get back and eat, I'm starving
    Almost there
