-- WEEK 6 DAY 26

One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples broke off heads of grain, rubbed off the husks in their hands, and ate the grain. 2 But some Pharisees said, “Why are you breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”

3 Jesus replied, “Haven’t you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4 He went into the house of God and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests can eat. He also gave some to his companions.” 5 And Jesus added, “The Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath.”

6 On another Sabbath day, a man with a deformed right hand was in the synagogue while Jesus was teaching. 7 The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees watched Jesus closely. If he healed the man’s hand, they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath.

8 But Jesus knew their thoughts. He said to the man with the deformed hand, “Come and stand in front of everyone.” So the man came forward. 9 Then Jesus said to his critics, “I have a question for you. Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing evil? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it?”

10 He looked around at them one by one and then said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” So the man held out his hand, and it was restored!
11 At this, the enemies of Jesus were wild with rage and began to discuss what to do with him.

    Lord,
Please help me not to focus so much on the rules, but the motivations behind them. Forgive my sins. Bless me and my family.
    In Jesus Name, Amen.

    LUKE 6:1-9

    OBSERVATION
It is so amazing to see the numerous laws and traditions in the Jewish nation during the bible days. Harvesting was one of the forbidden things not to do on the Sabbath. They even went as far as indicating different forms of harvesting that were forbidden. The one that happened in vs 1 and 2 is one of them. Again, the Pharisees were following Jesus around for the wrong reasons. If they would only spend as much time spreading the Word as they are trying to trip up Jesus, I can only imagine the amount of lives they would affect.

Jesus gave them a perfect example of when David and those with him were fleeing from Saul and they ate bread from the Temple that was only to be eaten by the priests. Nothing happened to them because David was walking upright before God and walking in his "destiny" so to speak. He and his men were hungry and ate the bread. The same for Jesus which is the reason He gave that example. The need for food in this case was far more important than man made rules. Besides, as Jesus pointed out, He not only have authority over the Pharisees but also over the Sabbath too.

Another situation happened that showed just how self righteous and self centered the Pharisees were. They would rather watch someone suffer with pain rather than heal them because of their laws regarding the Sabbath. Healing was not supposed to take place on the Sabbath.

    APPLICATION
Realize that my sins have already have been forgiven so I should not take walking a perfect line "ultra" serious as the Pharisees. At that point I will be focusing more on what I shouldn't do rather than focusing on being an active and vital part of building God's kingdom. There is work to do......

    PRAYER
Heavenly Father, help me not to get caught up in man made rules or condemning myself for things I did or didn't do. I pray to keep the desire to stay in your Word to learn more of you. Please help me to decrease while you increase in me. Thank you in the name of Jesus, Amen.
