HRM and/or calorie trackers?

Hi! I'm an incoming freshman at my goal and hoping to be able to keep it that way in college. I am posting here because you guys understand the finance issue that comes with being a student.
I was wondering if anyone has bought either a HRM for your workouts or those calorie tracker things that tell you your tdee? If you did, could you find it at a reasonable price and what did you buy exactly? How accurate would say it is?
I guess I should mention my exercise. I usually use stairs as my cardio...though I MAY try to get into running (jogging at my pace lol). I also do strength about 30 min 5x a week. Mostly I can be sedentary outside gym time, but I'm trying to change that
I hope someone actually found on because I am interested, but I'm a bit broke at the moment :P

Perhaps you can find some online reviews?
I bet that you've done that already, but i'll just throw anything out there lol.0 -
Those HRM trackers are tough because it calculates calories burned based off your heart rate. Well you can have high BPM lifting weights similarly to running. But you'll burn more calories running because your body is recruiting more muscle fibers to do the work. I bought a Timex Ironman Men's Road Trainer Heart Rate Monitor Watch. It was about $70 which included the HRM and watch. I've found it's closer in calories burned for when I run and compare it with the treadmill. So if running is your thing, it can give you a closer estimate rather than doing other cardio or weights.0

Since no one else has replies. Here is what I recently bought:
Polar FT4 Womens Heart Rate Monitor Watch
Link: http://amzn.com/B005M1P85O
Its $65 on Amazon (I'm a HUGE amazon fan!! lol) Both my cousin in-law and her besti have the same brand. It tracks your calories burned by your heart rate (you do have to wear the strap around your chest but you dont even realize its there) So if your doing stairs at school a lot this will really help you be able to keep track of what you burn outside of the gym, or in the gym if you do it as a rigorous workout (I tried it once, I almost died! lol)
There is also a step counter/calorie counter called Fitbit, its about $100 (sry no cheaper anywhere else) Its pretty bad *kitten*, I dont have one but I do want one lol. It tracks your steps for the day, keeps it on your account online, everytime you get near your computer while wearing it, it will automatically update everything you did that day. You can wear it while sleeping to track how much sleep you actually get in a night which I think is pretty nice.
- The BEST part about the fitbit is that it syncs with myfitnesspal without you ever having to put in anything manually. Most women will wear it on their bra strap, sport or otherwise, so that all day, everyday, they can see what they burn.
Both are going to cost you some money, but it depends on what you want. If you just want to walk and get your calories burned that way, the fitbit is an awesome toy to have bc it gives you more along those lines, if you are going to continue to lift weights and maybe incorporate cardio into your routine I recommend a HRM, (mine is not only cute, but a great price they can actually go as high as like $250!!) So its up to you, the HRM would be more your style from what I understand.
Hope this helps!!0 -
I have been using a polar FT7 for the past 6 months and so far it has worked great. You can get one online at amazon or in most sporting goods stores for about $75. In my experience, the built-in heart rate monitors and calorie counters on treadmills and other cardio equipment are extremely inaccurate. I would definitely invest in a separate heart rate monitor.0

Thank you all! For my current lifestyle an HRM seems like it would make more sense. I guess I will just have to wait and see how things are in the fall. I will definitely be snooping amazon now!0

thought about getting a hrm but they are all so finicky.
the chest monitor is the best. strap on your chest and do your workout.
there is a pulse monitor which seems in the way and annoying.
i ended up just getting a pedometer- omron.0
