Pizza

I have been really wanting pepperoni pizza. Does anyone have any low carb suggestions? I am not really missing the crust, I am missing the sauce. :)

At our house the other night, my kids made dinner by dialing up a pizza order. They ordered me a veggie pizza with hamburger and I took two pieces and only ate the topping w a side salad. I was amazed how much I enjoyed it...however I did notice how sweet the sauce is! It was difficult to figure the numbers, however many people have already done it for us on MFP.

It isn't something I will do often, but it was nice to see yet again that I am not suffering at all :)

look for a spaghetti sauce that is low sodium/heart healthy. those are often low in sugar too.

just read labels. its pretty easy!

you could also make your own with tomatoes, basil, garlic.. whatever you want.

Oh...I love pizza! I make my own using flatout bread for the crust. It has 6 net carbs and is a good size...like a personal pan pizza size. Then I use pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese. I use just a little sauce to keep the carbs down. Then you can add whatever toppings you want! I like veggie pizza so use some peppers, a little onion and a little tomato. Yummy!!! I figure mine is between 10-12 carbs depending on the toppings. Without toppings it is only 8 :-)

I think on the Food Network website I found a nifty little recipe for Chicken pizza by Elle Krueger. It basically consists of a chicken breast (you might pound it out to be flatter) and then topping with a no sugar spaghetti sauce (Ragu makes a decent one) or make your own by whipping up some crushed tomatoes and Italian blend spices in your blender. Then cover the chicken with your sauce, and top with turkey or regular pepperoni and mozzarella cheese. It's a great low carb way to get a pizza fix. And of course you can put on any pizza toppings you like, green peppers, sausage, etc.

I am following South Beach, so another option is to put pizza toppings on portabello mushrooms, or sliced, grilled zuchini. Yum! I also think somewhere on this forum is a recipe for a cauliflower pizza crust that I will be trying soon.

I find I don't miss the dough so much as long as I get the ooey gooey cheese and meats I'm craving.

    Hope this helps!

I once read a recipe that sounded good, I forgot about it til I read your post. It was using muffin pan and putting a large pepperoni in the circle like a cupcake liner, then filling with toppings like sauce, cheese and veggies. Then bake. Havent tried it yet but may now that I remembered it ;) Sounds simple enough :) I do wanna try the cauliflower crust someday too that sounds good. I agree witht the previous poster the heart healthy is usually better! Look for a little heart on the label. I use the heart healthy pasta sauce.

I make my own pizza sauce. No suggar pizza sauce is tough to find. You can find no sugar added pasta sauces but they are typically too thin for a good pizza sauce, and not spicy enough. I just take a large can of crushed tomatoes add a lot of spices (I'm a sight cook, I rarely measure non-critical elements and spices depend a LOT on if you are using fresh or dried, because dried are much smaller/lighter but not as powerful)
Add a bunch of oregano, basil, garlic, some onion, and a few fresh stevia leaves for some sweetness. Simmer over low heat until it reduces about 1/3rd of the liquid and you have a nice thick spicy sauce that will stand up to flavors of your other ingredients.

Next time I make some I'll try to write down what I add.

I agree make your own pizza sauce by using the lowest carb chopped/tinned tomatoes you can find and add seasonings to taste (basil, chilli & garlic are my faves) then simmer until concentrated/reduced.

I also use a red chilli pesto as a 'pizza sauce' as it is pretty low carb (about 2g per tbsp) and a little goes a long way.

Low carb pizza base ideas: Cauliflower pizza crust, flax pizza crust, Mini MIM crusts, Low carb pitta/wraps, portabello mushroom caps, Courgette (Zuchinni) Crust, cheese crisp crust, Meatza crust, omlette /frittata style pizza base.... I'm sure there's more. If you want more details on any of these 'crusts' search this group or google them.

Oh yeah on the Pesto Laura!! I'm a big time pesto fan and not being able to have it on tortellini is a tragedy. I get my fix by spreading 2 TBS of my basil/parmesan/garlic Pesto on a LC wrap, topping with an ounce of mozzarella and baking on a wire rack until the edges begin to brown. Tastes like summertime.

Make your own sauce or just stand there and read all of the sauce labels until you find one with the lowest carbs AND no sugar as an ingredient. Some have low carb counts but still have sugar as an ingredient. You want your carbs from the tomatoes.

    I like Ragu Homemade Style http://www.ragu.com/product/detail/89652/homemade-style That's 5g net carbs for 1/4 of a cup and I NEVER use 1/4 of a cup in a personal-sized pizza. More like 2 tablespoons (1/2 of 1/4 of a cup).

If you find a sauce that is low in carbs but you find it not sweet enough to curb your cravings, sprinkle Splenda on your pizza until it's good enough!

I've given up on finding crusts and now I just spread cheese and pepperoni on parchment paper on a baking sheet and cook about 8 minutes at 350. Cut it up into squares when it's done and sort of roll the squares up and dip them in a bit of sauce. Cures my cravings for pizza, no prob.

I take the garlic-herb flatbread, toast it up a little in the oven.

    Let it cool...

I make my own pizza crust, slice up some mozzarella medallions, finely chopped green pepper, garnish of red onion, thinly sliced cooked chicken breast and prosciutto - in to the oven it goes....

When it comes out, fresh basil chiffonade - dusting of freshly grated parmesan and holy HELL, pizza-porn here I come!!!!!! LOL!!!!!

i'm going to try using those "toy" frozen fillo cups. they look like something you'd make in a Little Suzy Homemaker oven. put in pico de gallo, a bunch of mozz and some chopped pepperoni. don't know if they are going to be too sweet, but it's worth a shot.
