hey I only just started running and didnt realise quite how far 5k was lol, gonna probably be way ouside times to start with but i hope i can get close at the moment running about 3k of the 5 and then speed walking the rest. gonna try maybe slowing my initial pace to start see if that gets me any further.0

do you run treadmill or outside? if you run treadmill, set it for 30 minutes and just do what you can. take a day of rest. then the next time you hop on the treadmill and do it again. you will see progress more than you think!0 -

I did a 5k yesterday and was 31:20. Its soooo frustrating because I'm really trying! I think a month of solid effort will really help!0

Did a 5k training run today (if i can believe my gps today) 36 minutes, which includes stopping for traffic twice (yeah, as if not doing that would get me under 30 mins )
what are you guys doing to improve speed?
today i tried a timer to do faster and slower intervals, 30 seconds 'fast', 3 minutes slow. going to work my way up the ladder that way, and add some longer, slow runs for endurance....0 -

You can do two types of runs to improve your speed (well there are lots of methods but these are two I know very well). Tempo runs are when you do a warm up say 2km then run at a "comfortably hard" pace for a set number of kms. Then do a cool down for another 2 km. This type of run improves your lactic threshold and allows your body to learn how to remove lactic waste more efficiently. The other type is a pick up run where you do sprints for a set amount of time and then run to recover and repeat. For example, 6-10 sets of 60 second sprints with 2-3 minutes of recovery inbetween.
I did a lot of this when I was training for my first half marathon which I completed on Saturday. I'm allowing myself to heal and then I will be back to trying to improve my speed.
Keep up the good work everyone!0
