How are you today - 8/13/12

I didn't do well yesterday but at least I know why I fall off plan now to prevent it in the future. Typically, it's because I didn't eat a meal or something along those lines. I am trying to create new habits for myself. Thanks to another low carber who mentioned the book "The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do, and How to Change." It talks a lot about diet, and has helped me so much!

The main thing I've read from the book is that there is a trigger-action-reward cycle. The example in the book is that a guy would go to the canteen and buy and eat a cookie ~3.30pm while talking to others. He first tried eating different foods, etc, and worked out it's the talking to people was the real craving, the cookie was an excuse. So he would set his alarm to 3.30 to go talk to someone for ten min before getting back to work. Some days he'd still end up eating a cookie but he didn't beat himself up about it, but he formed the new habit of chatting instead and didn't need the alarm any more.

It says that whenever you do one of these undesirable things to list the time, where you are, who you're with, what you mood is, and the immediate proceeding action. This way you can work out the trigger for the action.

So what I've done is I am eating every three hours, having a big glass of green/oolong tea first thing in the morning and before bed, and waking up at 3:30am now. I also added a little more carbs, My mentality the last year, and usually the time I go off plan, is the evening. My bf eats a big meal with a main course and two sides. I've lived with him for almost a year, and got used to this concept. Like, it's not "the same" unless I do the same. So, I am making a main meal with a side like cottage cheese. I also have a piece of dark chocolate and just let it melt in my mouth. It's just enough to curb any sweet cravings.

I really need to get back on track with my eating, so hoping these changes will help me.

I am starting day 3 of my new low carb lifestyle. The first day was great, easy peasy, but yesterday I really struggled. I hit my carb limit early on and then struggled the rest of the day to stay under my limit. My mistake was eating cottage cheese with some sugar free jam in it for breakfast, I think. Plus I bought some Kraft Indulgences chocolate cream cheese that I wanted to make a mock danish with and I couldn't wait to try it. That was 12 grams right there! However, it was delicious so I will keep it in mind for some time when I am craving a chocolate goodie or attending an event where I might feel deprived and plan for it a little better.
