Calorie intake to lose...

I everyone, I have a quick question and hopefully some of you can help me with the answer. Currently I have been eating a 1200 calorie meal plan and no exercise. I've been told before that you can lose weight without exercising based only on the calories you eat.

The 1200 calories doesn't feel like enough for me to eat, I still feel hungry throughout the day, and I'm not losing any weight. I'm actually just maintaining. I would really like to lose at least 20 lbs by Christmas but I know that my eating habits are the biggest part of what I need to change. If I don't change my eating habits then any exercise I do will be done just to tire me out and I don't want to work for nothing.

Should I increase my calories? I was really looking forward to just concentrating on my eating habits until the end of August. I'm in PT for my lower back and that's when my PT ends. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Sfergy

  • Hi, Sfergy!

Generally speaking, 1200 calories per day, is the recommended allotment for a sedentary woman. That is, someone that has little to no exercise. On 1200 calories per day, and without exercise, I am not surprised that you are maintaining versus losing. That's not to say you can't lose weight this route but by diet alone - it's a toss up. If you want to jumpstart your metabolism, I would suggest discussing the types of exercise you can do with your PT, obviously you don't want to cause yourself any damage or postpone recovery. I would think that any workout in the water (pool) would be beneficial. Maybe consider this? Swimming burns calories quickly and gets your system circulating. You don't need to get crazy doing laps but exercise will jumpstart that metabolism.

If you aren't going to include exercise, and focus mainly on diet, think about your food choices. Carbs are terrible metabolisers. Carbs turn into sugar, and sugars are tough on the body to breakdown. Focus on clean eating, and pick foods that will contribute to jumpstarting your metabolism.

    Some questions..

How soon did you start this cutback to 1200 calories per day? If you've done this cold turkey, you may need to boost up your caloric intake to something more workable. Maybe take it up a notch to 1500 calories, for example, and aim to shoot below that limit. Sometimes your body can go into shock if suddenly introduced to a new routine. Listen to what your body is telling you. Believe it or not, weight loss is less about food restriction and more about what you eat.

Eta.. A tip about feeling HUNGRY.

    - When you get the urge to eat, drink a glass of water.
Many times, our bodies translate the signal of dehydration to being hungry.

    - Still hungry? Eat a piece of fruit.
This is a great alternative to breads, for example, and takes care of that sweet tooth!

If you are genuinely STILL hungry after doing step 1 and 2, then reconsider your allotted calories. Best of luck.

Thank you so much for your help... I have taken advice from another MFP user and read up on TDEE, BMR and BF% and figured out all my numbers. I should be eating around 1673 calories a day doing NOTHING... and around 1917 at LIGHT activity. I am going to try these numbers and also speak with PT and find out what he would recommend for exercising at home to help my weight lose progress.

For those who would like to know the tools I used for my numbers, use this website:
    http://www.fat2fitradio.com/tools/

1st- use the Military Body Fat Calculator
    2nd- use the BMR calculator

    Thank you,

you didn't make public your food diary, but perhaps the kinds of food you're choosing for your 1200 calories also had to do with it. I know in the past I've had relatively low cal and low fat foods but with tons of carbs and sugar. During the last 3 weeks I've started over and have been focusing on getting a lot more protein and trying to keep my carbs to 20% of my calories consumed and tried not to eat bread, potatoes etc. I haven't been hungry, I've lost several pounds--even during a work meeting/vacation and a 10 days without exercise in a row. In the last 3-4 weeks I've lost 12 pounds and feel like I'm finally getting a jump start.

Let us know how it goes with the changes you made. But don't think that exercise is a waste. Even if you're not losing weight it's good for your cardiovascular health as well as for your bones. Be sensible and work within the recommendations of your healthcare professionals. Good luck!
