Hey I've seen this comment answered a 100x by people more experienced than myself but i thought I'd add a thread for newbies to get the program rolling.. All members feel free to add to this. Your ideas are greatly valued!!

1. Start building a support network.. That means reaching out and asking people to become your friends.. It might seem hard at first but as you get rolling it will get easier and easier.. Feel free to ask people who are in this group as well.

2. Fill out your profile. This could be whatever you want it to be but it should include some basic info about yourself and some goals you have here. Make sure you include some bite size goals that are attainable on your way to you larger goals

3. Get a profile Picture up - Some of you dont have the ability to do this with your computers or phones but if you do you should. It will help people know who they are accepting.. If you feel self conscious just put one up your comfortable with.. No one says you have to take a bathing suit before pic at this point.. As you lose your confidence will grow and you'll probably want to show off.

4. Believe in yourself - YOU Can do this!!! Read some of the testimonials... Figure out what theyre doing right and copy them.. A big part of this isI determination and a healthy self concept.

5. We're all in this together but no one is "over" you. Some people try to be bossy about what you should do but just remember they are suggestions.. No one is paying for professional advice though some of the advice on hear is invaluable..

6. Stay focused.. Everybody has different value systems, try to friend people who share your interests.. Some people flirt, other people swear, other people post half naked pics.. If any of this bother's you dont friend them or unfriend them.. Dont get caught up in the small stuff and throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Thats about it for now.... who's next?

Mark.

Need a custom ticker to track progress? Try tickerfactory.com.

Below is one I am using for my August Bike Challenge.

Definitely would like to add that goals don't just have to be about weight at first--some of the smaller goals could be getting in the habit of logging everyday. Took myself about four tries before I figured out how to get myself into logging every day. I think my 30 day log in is coming up soon!

Another tip I would suggest is find a group that pertains to you to help you find friends of the same values, body structure, or even personality traits. :)

The last one I can think of is RESEARCH! Figure out what foods are best for you and how to shop for them! Generally, the healthiest food choices are fresh produce and in order for that to turn out as tasty as possible, you need to know how to choose the ones you're going to cook! And don't just research fresh produce. Check out the things you eat the most or all of the items you get that have nutrition information and READ IT! If you don't know what an ingredient is, we are in the age of Google and other various search engines. I don't think I can tell anyone EVERYTHING I learned by snooping through the foods at my house and making a list of ingredients I don't know before going back to the computer.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. Use it. :)

Just made my Christmas Ticker.. Here is the how to from my messaging w dirtystacks :

After you make the ticker, you have to copy the link that is listed in the box titled "bbCode". Then you have to paste it on each posting. Because it isn't MFP it isn't automatic. However, once you create it, the link will update in every post it listed on, so long as you log back in to ticker factory and update the same ticker using your login.

I am new to MFP as well as blogging and I am in awe of the support and inspiration from other people on this site. I have lost weight before, but I haven't been able to "maintain", I'm hoping to change that this time around.

A little about me, I'm closing in on 42 years old, married, have 4 kids, 1 granddaughter and a sweet dog. Two of our four are in college and aren't home much one is raising a child and working to get back in college, with the baby (16) in highschool. I spent 7 years in college begining at age 34 and obtained two degrees... now is the time for me to focus on myself.

My goal (begining 7/21) was 25 pounds by Christmas and 10 more pounds by April (taking a ladies cruise). My starting weight on 7/21 was 165 - after only 30 days I had lost 12 pounds. I am currently following the South Beach / Atkins approach, take lots of vitamins and drink a lot of water. I walk every other day - but I intend to change that to every day soon. On a typical day, I consume no more than 1000 calories and some days up to 1200 but that is my limit.

Another problem, I smoke...not much, but still I smoke. I am trying to quit but find it more difficult (stressful) to do both. With that said, when I reach my goal on Christmas day, I will put those down for good. Two birds - One very large stone!

I look forward to getting to know you all and thank you for the support!! Any advice is welcome!!
