A1c 9.1 but normal Glucose levels normal, why?

As I posted when introducing myself last week, at a blood test a few weeks back my Hb1Ac was 9.1 - very high.

So my Dr sent me for a starvation glucose test. That has come back as normal 5.5 mmol or 91 in US measurements. When I phoned up the receptionist said "oh yes its come back, its normal, no more test required!!"

I have another appointment at Drs next week, before then I am trying to understand these different measurements.

Why would my 1AC be so high and then the glucose tests normal?

Between the high 1AC and the glucose test, I have been dieting like made, lost 7lbs before joining MFP and lost another 3lbs since and I have been working out at the gym 6 days a week.

That is very mystifying. I wonder if something is wrong with one of the tests. It is possible that you have improved your insulin resistance so much that when you drank the yucky sugar stuff your body was able to handle it. The fasting glucose tolerance test measures how well you deal with a premeasured amount of glucose right now whereas the A1C measures your average BG for the last 3 months. When you go in, ask your dr. but regardless of what he says I would want another A1C in 3 months and I would monitor my own BG with a meter.

Thanks for the response, getting another A1c makes sense. I assume BG = Blood Glucose? For the small cost I think I may get a meter.

Either way, the A1c test has frightened me enough to make the changes to my diet and get back into training for the first time in over ten years.

The morning, fasting glucose test shows what you bgl was that moment. A1C shows what your average bgl has been for the 3 months prior to the A1C test. It is very likely that your diet and exercise has resulted in a drastic drop in you blood glucose levels. That is wonderful and indicates that your hard work is resulting in very positive outcomes..

Thanks for the input Laura, much appreciated.

My understanding of diabetes though would mean that the BG levels would still be "higher then normal" but that a change in diet and exercise would help improve things. In this case the BG level is almost half the HbA1C.

If I am honest I am hoping that for me to get such a dramatic change through diet and exercise actually means I am lucky and don't have T2 and the test was a wake up call. Dr's appointment is Tuesday will hopefully know more then.

Do you have your own glocose monitor? I think you should monitor yourself on a regular basis to see what is happening. One "normal" fasting reading does not mean everything is ok. Indeed when my diabetes was very out of control mynumbers were all aver the place too. You want to be in a nice tight controlled range

Get a glucose monitor..test yourself two hours after eating and also a morning fasting level. Do that for several days to get an idea of where you are at

A meter testing for a fasting BG should be 125 or less. If over, you are considered a diabetic. My A1C was 90 days ago 8.9, and last week I had gotten it down to 6. something. I did that by using the Atkins low carb diet, and was trying to be as strict as I could.

I'd be talking to your pcp and a nutritionist.

My weight went from 258 to 242 in 90 days as well.

Remember that A1C measures 6 months of blood sugar levels. Is your glucose levels in the normal range consistently? I don't like to take my blood sugar level. I hate needles. If your levels have been in the normal range consistently and you A1C level is high, you may need to take it more often. You may be spiking during the day and not know it.
  • I understand your concern and confusion, I too just received my A1C numbers and it was 6.5 and my glucose was 100. For the last 5 years , my A1C has been anywhere from 5.6- 5.8, and glucose has only been over 100 twice at 101 and 103. So like yourself, imagine my surprise when the numbers came up as written above. It does give me good reason to lose weight and take exercise program much more serious. Lost 8 pounds in 21 days and exercising as hard as i have in last five years. The other test you took which came back normal, indicates , maybe a problem with your A1C test numbers. Good Luck as you go down this path.

I have noticed my BG levels are sensitive to exercise. So the few lifestyle changes may have made a big difference in your daily levels, and will make a big difference in your next HbgA1C.

I really appreciate everyone's response. I will know a lot more in 24 hour. After another visit to the Dr.

As some of you predicted, my Dr is going to repeat the HbA1C and as I am about to have a few days away, that wont be done until next Weds. What course of action we then take, really depends on those results.

He says it is possible to control the diabetes, but, I need to lose a lot more weight. Not that I needed much more motivation.
