Hills????

Just wanting others thoughts on hills. My 5K run takes in 4 hills. The first one is really steep (well steep for me) and the other three are more gradual but over a much longer distance.
Personally I prefer the steep one. Partly because it is early on in my run and I want to get it over and done with but also because for me mentally it is easier to just grit my teeth and get on with it. The longer hills seem to go on forever and they play havoc with my mind.
Anyone else have a love hate relationship with hills? How many hills are in your runs?

My 5k is in a very hilly neighborhood...my own. Right now since I'm barely on week one I'm keeping to a mostly flat area with only 2 hills. Later as I get stronger I'd like to brave some steeper segments to help me prepare. As I do hills I try to remind myself that they are very good for the old behind.
I agree with you about a steep one early on in the run. Psychologically getting it over with has a great euphoric effect those more gradual slopes jt prolong the burn and do seen to go on forever.0 -
Love / Hate relationship is right... I find myself talking to myself to get up the hills. I have 1 and potentially 2 hills depending on the route I take to get home. Also after I conquer said hills and recover a little bit while I am still running it seems it makes the rest of the run seem like a piece of cake (sorry for the food reference  ) That does not mean you need to go get a piece of cake... LOL.0

I also love/hate hills. I have 5 different sized hills on my nightly run. I hate them because they wear me out, but I love them because they are making me a stronger runner. My 5K won't have any hills so I'm hoping that my practice on the hills will make my flat land 5k run time faster.
But I agree with you, if they were in race I'd prefer to get them out of the way in the beginning of the race.0 -
Just starting to add more (and steeper) hills into my workout runs. Hoping this will make me a stronger runner, eliminate the need for intervals at the track and improve my 5k time...0

Same here. VA 10 miler / 4 miler is on the 29 th. I live in The City of 7 Hills !! And the hills are massive. Some professional marathons say this race is a killer. I am going to do a practice run thus weekend. I know I can't run the whole 4 uphill, but hope to better my time.
I guess maybe strength training would help ??? Anything to build leg...0 -
My first 5K last weekend had a damn hill right at the end. It sucked.
I just started hill training this week. Right now I have to walk part way through.0 -
I usually do my c25k through my neighborhood, to the park, and around the track at the park, which is all fairly flat.. on days I'm feeling ambitious, I will go to the cemetary, which is super hilly and pretty....I actually love doing my work out there but some days cant handle it LOL
Today I did part of the city bike trail, which involved some hills. Unfortunately I have a mystery injury to my leg, so the hills were hard and I had to walk, a lot.
I think it's important to vary the terrain once you get to like week 3-4.0
