Sitting is painful after big weight loss

Hi!

I've noticed over the past few months that my tail bone area gets super sore after sitting for over 30 minutes. I have a desk job which requires sitting for all tasks. When I was 120 pounds heavier, I could sit for 7-8 hours and I'd be fine. Now, I sit for 45 minutes and the pain is crazy.

I've mentioned it to my Physical Therapist and Chiropractor, and both seemed to shrug it off as a side-effect of the big weight loss. I purchased a gel-seat cushion (meant for wheelchairs) and that helps for a little while. I'm beginning to wonder if I should go see my primary doctor to see if there's something they can do to help.

I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience, and/or any suggestions. :flowerforyou:

Thank you!
Rachel

I've lost almost 70lbs and have had a similar experience. If I sit a certain way on the couch for too long my tail bone gets really sore. Luckily my office chair doesn't bother me. I thought I was unique in this- so I'm glad to know that someone else had a similar experience.

My office chair is fine, but I have problems riding in the car. My butt starts to get numb after about 2 hrs of driving/riding. Never a problem with that before weight loss!

I am down 98lbs and I have a big problem with this. I've also started horseback riding again and after a 90 minute lesson my behind and crotch area feels bruised for days. I'm hoping it will lessen over time as my body gets use to having less padding.

Me too. I am also hoping my body will get used to having less padding!

I've noticed it too sometimes. Less padding I guess. I seem to always loose my butt first when I loose weight! I think it just takes time for your body to get used to less weight to carry around and you will have pains in certain areas due to rapid loss of weight. I think this is why my shoulders are hurting me, dr's can't figure out anything else and I have been xrayed and MRI'd. My physical therapist really thinks it is due to weight loss and not as much fat holding up my arms and now my shoulder muscles have to do more work. I am working on shoulder muscle strengthen exericses daily to help with this. I sure hope it helps cause it hurts so bad when my shoulder do act up. Never had any shoulder pain issues till after my sleeve surgery either! Weird!

Thank you for all of the responses! I just saw them today.

My chiropractor tried adjusting that area, and I don't think it helped much. I have a doctor appointment next week to make sure it's not something else. I thought it was due to the weight loss, because I didn't fall, and the only change I've had really is the weight loss. My rear-end really shrunk and to me it seems like it's practically gone... especially compared to the way it looked before. I'll let you know what I find out from the doctor. :ohwell:

I'm just so relieved to know that I'm not the only one who has had these strange aches (my shoulders hurt sometimes too, just like spfldpam).

    Thanks again!

You don't have as much fat back there anymore for padding. It happens to nearly every WLSer. Mine lasted about 8 months. Even now, if I have to attend meetings and sit in a different chair, after a few hours I'm hurting. It's not unusual.

    Hi!

I went to the doctor, and she sent me straight to Physical Therapy. So far, ultrasound/pain patches are helping very little. I think the whole thing baffles them. I did have some goofy 'tilting' going on in my pelvic/hip area, but when they tried fixing it, it didn't fix the tailbone-sitting pain.

After reading the posts here, I've mentioned to the PT person that it sounds like a common thing for WLS patients. It sounds like I may be headed for a shot of Cortizone or something like that, but when I have the follow-up with the doctor, I'm going to see if they can do an MRI just to rule out infection/tumors. I did a google search on tailbone pain, and it sounds like it's wise to rule those out too. (I think doctors hate when I do my own internet searches on medical stuff, but it doesn't hurt to be informed... right?) :blushing:

I appreciate everyone's posts on this topic! It really helps that we have a community for WLS - we seem to run into things that are exclusive to WLS, and it's so nice to know that we're all in this together. :flowerforyou:

    Hi!

Just in case anyone else is reading this thread and wondering what my medical community is doing to help me with the tailbone/coccyx pain issue... Here's an update.

I got some exercises/stretches from the Physical Therapist, and I mix them up so I'm doing some kind of lunges/squats/bridges/leg exercises (with a band)/abdominal-core exercises about 5 times a week. It hasn't helped much - very little, if at all, but I keep doing them in hopes that it'll eventually help my pain issue.

In my follow-up appointment with my doctor, I got X-Rayed in the lower back/coccyx area, and everything came back 'normal'. Now, they're sending me to another specialist at a Bone & Joint place. It sounds like I'm headed for a shot for the pain. I won't have that appointment until late November. The wait is frustrating.... :grumble:

If anyone has any suggestions for what I can try sitting on, or any type of exercises/stretches that have helped, I'm all ears!

I was just commenting on this very topic to my hubby today. I not only have a sore bum but my elbows are so pointy and sharp - thought I had pierced my leg when i leaned down with my elbow into my thigh. Where in the heck did those pointy things come from? Thought it might jsut be me - but glad to see it is a common side effect of losing so much padding.

Me too! MY WLS doc was not surprised, and also suggested physical therapy or exercise to build up muscles in the butt to give the coccyx more support. Its (literally) a pain!! If anyone has been given any specific exercises, I'd love to know what they suggested before I can get in with a PT!

I was given a bunch of exercises when I went to a Physical Therapist for my coccyx pain. Most of them are Squats/Lunges and variations of them - like walking lunges, and walking squats with a knotted theraband around my ankles (you keep the squatted position as you move forward - kinda like a side-shuffle). She also told me to build my core (I'm thinking she figured it would help my posture, which would help me sit up more) There is a 'butt' stretch that she gave me that helps a little. I'll try to describe it...

I lie on the floor on my back with my knees bent. Then, I cross my right leg over my left leg so my right ankle is by my left knee. From there, I move my knee away from myself, and then toward myself. I feel different stretches as I slowly move that leg. Then, I repeat on the other side.

I don't know if that helps at all - she gave me handouts with pictures on them to help me remember, but that doesn't help me put it into words. LOL!

    I hope you feel better!:flowerforyou:

Since I'm finally checking in... I wanted to mention that I did get injections (they just called them 'injections' but I'm guessing that it was a steroid of some sort)

About a month ago, I had the injections in 3 joints, my sacral-coccyx and both of my sacral-illeac (not sure if I got that right, but it's something like that) joints. They didn't help at all. I haven't had my follow-up yet, so I'm not sure what's next.

It would be great if the pain would go away on its own like someone mentioned on this thread quite a while back. I'll be sure to let you know if that ever happens. :ohwell:

I can totally relate! My knees are getting boney and knobby too. I'm going to need to start sleeping with a body pillow soon so my knees can't touch when I sleep on my side. This weight-loss journey is certainly interesting.

Kind of a gross outcome for me, but I had this once too and it turned out to be a cyst around my tailbone.. specifically called a polynidal (sp?) cyst and it had to be surgically removed. Its come back a few times over the years but if removed right its not suppose to. It makes it really painful to sit since it wraps around the tailbone. I hope they find something that works for you!

I'm 4.5 years out... the tailbone pain was bad in the beginning but by 2 years out it went away. It just takes time learning to sit new ways and getting used to not having padding there.

    Hi,

I saw the Bone & Joint specialists today for a follow-up to my 'Anti-inflammatory Joint Injections' (which did nothing to help the problem). The doc explained it a different way this time. He told me that when losing weight, the ligaments (which are mostly made of protein) get weak because the body takes the protein from them as well as the muscles. When the ligaments are weak, it causes pain. And here I thought it was just a padding issue. :ohwell:

Maybe that helps explain why so many people had the pain for a while, but it eventually went away...

I hope everyone is doing well, and that if you are experiencing pain that it does go away and quickly too :flowerforyou:
