Week 5 Day 3... the dreaded 20 min run. Success!

I got sick last week. Double ear infection not walking straight sick. I was unable to get my runs in. Today I felt back to normal so I thought I'd go ahead and give my next day a try. It was the Week 5 Day 3 aka the.20.minute.run. I panicked!! Then I thought, just get out there and do what you can and if you repeat the day so what. You've been down for a week and your endurance might have lost out a little, but see what you can do. HECK YEAH! I knocked that 20 minute run out of the park! I was slow, real slow, like turtle slow, but I proved to myself that *I* can do this!
So from one fat girl to any others who wonder if you can do this, I say yes, yes you can and I'm proof. I have NEVER been a runner in my life. Even in high school P.E. I walked the required mile you were to run in under 12 minutes. I didn't think I could do it so I didn't even try. Many years later with a better head on my shoulders I'm finally becoming a *runner*.
Sorry for the long post, but I'm on such a high right now!!

Great job! I find that I improve more when I give myself extra rest days every now and then. For example, I rested 4 days this week between runs because I was having pain in one leg. After my rest, I ran 26 minutes straight today! It is so rewarding . You have reached the point of no return...you will only keep impressing yourself with your endurance. Your week off might have actually helped.0

I'm on week 4 right now. 5 minutes about kills me so I've been wondering how the heck I'm going to do 8 minutes and then 20 minutes!
I feel more encouraged after reading your post!0 -
Huge congrats0

WAHOO!! Congratulations! I'm about to tackle the 20 minutes tonight. eep!0

GREAT JOB!!
You'll need this confidence boost when things, even back at interval pace, get tough next week! This morning during my two 10 minute runs I kept thinking "girl, you ran for 20 minutes, quit talking yourself out of this!"
Good luck, chick!0 -
Congrats! I am nervous for that day, but I am still several weeks away. Thanks for the motivation and keep up the great work!0

Thanks everyone! I'm into Week 6 Day 2 tonight. Last night I wanted to run, but knew it wasn't a C25K day so I just decided to see how long it would take me to run one mile with no walking. 12:03!! HOLY COW, I thought for sure it'd take me 20 minutes! Now to build my endurance to do 3 consecutive 12 minute miles.
Smiles all!0 -
That's so awesome! I'm on week 3 right now and can't imagine running for 20 minutes. Your post gives me hope.0

Thanks for the hope! I just did it, too! It really wasn't as bad as I thought. I just kept a slow pace, got into a zone, did some thinking, had good music on, and it didn't kill me! :drinker:0

I do mine tomorrow and I'm trying not to psych myself out about it. Did the 8 minute runs yesterday and they were much easier than I thought. This is just 4 minutes more with no breaks. My strategy is to just plug in my book on tape, go slow, and just lose myself in the story until it's hopefully over before I know it.
Have been having some hip pain and am on steroids but won't let that stop me. Like you, I have NEVER been a runner either but was always secretly envious of those who were. I've had the mental thought to do Couch 2 5K for years, but this is the first time I've actually done it. Every day, I'm amazed at what my body can do. My mind is definitely my biggest enemy in this game.
Thank you for your post. I was looking for inspiration to get me through tomorrow....you helped.

You've got the perfect mentality to do it! Put that book on tape in and go slow like you said and you'll be amazed. Plus it's a pretty great feeling when you're done to say yourself, "I did it!" Let us know how it goes.0 -
yay well done! I'm another fat girl who's recently started running on the C25K programme and I've completed the dreaded week 5 20 minute run this morning! If I keep this up I might even start to enjoy running one day0

Just finished my W5D3. I tried really hard not to think about it and when the coach said "JOG!" after my 5 min warmup, I took a deep breath and just went. I concentrated on making it mailbox to mailbox and didn't focus on the time at all. Also focused on my breathing -- which stayed pretty even the whole time. When my mind started to play games on me, I reminded myself of two inredible men -- the guy in the olympics with no legs and the blind guy who climbed Mt. Everest. Figured if they could manage to perservere, I could do this crap for 20 minutes -- right? RIGHT! When the guy came on and said "half way there", I marked a milestone in my life - I had run for 10 mins straight and didn't feel like I was about to die. I just kept going...making mini-goals in my head (just make it to that stop sign). Before I knew it, it was time to cool down. I could have kept going. This is so incredible to me b/c I have never ever ever been a runner. If I had to chase after my daughter for 10 feet, I'd be breathing like I just ran 10 miles. Walking 1 flight of stairs left me having to catch my breath. But today....TODAY!....I ran for 20 mins straight and was not even winded. The biggest smile broke out on my face when I was done. I had just reached a major personal accomplishment in my life. Something I've done only for myself, by myself. My first 5k is on Oct. 13 and it is to raise money to buy mosquito nets for children in Kenya to prevent Malaria. I've so got this! :bigsmile:0

Yay!!! This is so beautifully written. I'm so happy for you!0 -
I just wanted to thank all of you for the great motivation! I do mine tomorrow and I'm already thinking of excuses to push it off one more day!! Wish me luck! and I'll keep you posted!! If any of you want to add me as a friend go ahead I could use some fellow runner in my friend group!0

I completed Week 5 day 3 yesterday! So excited that I did it having never been a runner. I was sore from doing another workout the day before and was worried that would interfere but I did it! It felt amazing when I was done, a serious accomplishment! I didn't make 2 miles (1.7) but refuse to get caught up with that number. 20 minutes running is what I'm proud of!0

Definitely let us know! Don't get to intimidated by it. The worst that happens is you can't do it and you try another day.0 -
