Jus been diagnosed - over whelmed with advice and medication

As I posted when introducing myself over a month ago, at a blood test a few weeks back my Hb1Ac was 9.1 - very high.
So the Locum Dr sent me for a starvation glucose test. That come back at 5.5 mmol or 91 in US measurements - normal
On the follow up with my regular Dr, he said based on the first measurement I was T2, BUT, he wanted to double check due to the starvation test so he sent me for a re-test. Just back from seeing him yet again, new result for HbA1c was 7.2 a vast improvement so the weight loss and daily gym work are paying off. Bad news, he says I do have T2.
Good news, he is not putting me on any medication and wants me to see how I get on with the weight loss and will re-test me in a month.
However, he has prescribed me Simvastatin, not, because I have high cholesterol but for what he said were preventative reasons. He checked my blood pressure and it was through the roof, probably because of the diagnosis but he wants me to buy a blood pressure meter and take regular checks.
So my question for this knowledgeable group, has anyone else here been put on Statins for their T2 when their cholesterol is normal. Is this usual?

I know of several people who were prescribed a statin for "preventative measures" when they were diagnosed T2, so it is not unheard of. My doctor didn't prescribe for me at diagnosis because I wasn't even close to having high cholesterol, but he did mention that I was an exception and that most of his newly-diagnosed T2's are prescribed a statin.0

I am on a statin as well... doctor says as a preventative from stroke and heart attack ... I double checked my normal sources and they concurred.
Good luck with your journey as well.0 -
Both my husband and I were prescribed statins when we were diagnosed with T2. My cholesterol was high, but his has always been low/normal.0

Thank you for responding everyone, I feel a bit more comfortable about that now. Though I'd feel better if I didn't need them
I have been reading the leaflet that comes with the tablets. There was a note in there that the drug is sometimes prescribed to those with T2, even with normal cholesterol levels, as a preventative measure against CHD.
Quote from the leaflet "they are used along with diet if you have coronary heart disease (CHD) or at risk of CHD because you have sugar diabetes" then further along also says "may prolong your life by reducing the risk of heart disease problems regardless of the amount of cholesterol in the blood".0 -
My cholesterol was a little high when I was diagnosed. I have a family history of problems. Since I don't have any bad reactions to it, I have been taking some form of statin for 14 years now. My chol is fine but I will continue to take it. Dr. is also planning on putting me on a BP med even though I am low normal. I was diagnosed at 34 and since the rest of me is pretty healthy I am likely going to have to live with T2 for a long time.0
