Paleo/Primal restaurant guide?

Within my community of friends/social life we eat out a lot. We are all diverse so eating out works best as an easy activity to do after work to keep our relationships/friendships and up to date (as well as not being all work or not having similar interests).

Is there a paleo or primal restaurant guide anywhere for different places? Or what are your common orders/alternations? From fast food to fine dinning we hit it all. I try to eat more primal options (finding strict paleo choices is hard and I'm not good at asking for alternations to the menu - not confident enough always.) We eat out and drink about 3-4x per week, sometimes more if we are catching breakfast before hiking and lunch after on a weekend.

Gotta build that confidence to ask for menu/meal alterations! Tell them you have a food allergy/intolerance if this makes you more comfortable

I just tell them what I want on my food and they will do it or they won't see me coming in their business again.

A lot of times I order things like a grilled chicken sandwich and have them hold the bun...I had an awesome one that was a caprese chicken sandwich...so grilled chicken, fresh tomato, some mozzerella.

A lot of places also have some sort of steamed veggies as a side.

Even places like Buffalo Wild Wings - I order naked tenders and ask for sauce on the side (rather then them being tossed in them) and a side salad...I use the sauce sparingly...

Depending on the resturant you may be able to order off the kids menu - we went to Red Robin the other day and I was able to order the grilled chicken tenders (only available on kids menu) with a side of broccili

Only problem is even eating things like chicken breast in resturants and such they are usually higher in sodium to begin with - I make sure I drink a lot of water with my meal

When I am done with my PhD, I am planning to open a little paleo restaurant/cafe/shop! Talked to a lot of my friends already and they love the idea! Plus: there's so far only ONE real paleo-restaurant which opened last year in Berlin. I am soo looking forward to realizing my idea.... collecting ideas for the shop/menu etc already. This will be great for paleo people as well as for 'normal' people.... will try to get the attention of diabetics and people with food allergies. So they will finally be able to eat out without having to sort out certain things from their plate and without the need to ask about ingredients (gluten etc...).
    What do you think??

We normally do not eat out, but when we have to, I go for a place where you can either make your own salad, or one that has rotisserie chicken (like Swiss Chalet) or a Steak House. You just have to repeat a few times the magic words: Please, substitute or No dressing/bread/fries, please. And ensure before ordering that it was absolutely NOT breaded.
  • We eat out more often for breakfast-- bacon, eggs, fruit, and vegetables if you put it in an omelet (we have an awesome all-local place near our house, so this is better than your average IHOP fare). You can always go for sushi and get sashimi (I don't stress too hard about the tbsp. or so of soy sauce that I ingest, nor my occasional miso soup). Most steak places around here are good-- steak, some veggie option and a lot of places have baked sweet potato options now. Even Claim Jumpers has their "Simply Grilled Chicken Breast" which is a chicken breast, and you can get double grilled veggies (usually lots of squash) instead of the mashed potatoes it comes with.

I just generally try to stay with meat and some sort of vegetable, or a salad with protein (depending on mood).

I am usually able to accommodate my needs at any restaurant, except the piroshky place (which naturally, only has piroshky).

One of my favorite things to do is order whatever meat I'd like (for instance a pastrami sandwich if it's on the menu), and a green salad. I just toss the bun and make a meat salad. We have a BBQ restaurant here in town that offers the most delish BBQ brisket salad. It's fantastic.

I'm a little shy of asking for all the substitutions, so I do my best with ordering something with meat and adding the salad. I guess more and more restaurants will wrap your burger in lettuce...

    Best & eat well
  • I've been paleo for a little less than a month. I've tried to stay away from restaurants, but it is inevitable on weekends with my boyfriend, who is not following the paleo plan. This weekend for instance, I got a bacon cheeseburger (the cheese was my treat). When asked if I wanted fries or tator tots for a side, I asked if they could substitute a salad with dressing on the side instead and it wasn't a problem ($1 upcharge though). Tossed the bun and then ate the burger with the salad. I hate being that person, but it's worth it!
