Scoliosis and running

So is running good if you have scoliosis ?? Not sure if the hard impact is going to do more damage. I have curvature and it is also causing some discs to be compressed in lower back. Doing strength training to build up back, legs and hope that will help support. Doc has been thrilled with weight loss and hasn't said to avoid any type exercise.

I too have scoliosis.... diagnosed when I was a kid.. nothing else from it.... Not sure if it's helping or not... I'm having issues with my upper back/neck area due to a car accident and probably bad posture.. my Physical Therapy discribed my lumbar spine as loosy goosy!! But I'm still going until they make me stop! I've just started incorporating total body toning on my off run days to help with strenght.. so we'll see.

I was always told that I could do any excercise I liked, unless it made my back hurt. I've noticed when I ''run'' harder, my lower back aches for about a day afterwards. To be safe, I run with my feet barely lifting off and do small strides instead of big ones. And I contract my abs (when I can remember!). I've noticed I don't get any back pain when I jog like this. Also, I make sure to stretch/lengthen my spine really well after every jog...

Not sure about my stride. I have very long legs, but I am jogging more than running, so I am guessing it is short.

I have been trying to stretch spine afterwards.

Not anymore pain than I usually have, so that is good.

You can always try swimming. My friend was in a brace for a few years from scoliosis. Her doctor suggested for her to swim regularly as it helped evenly strengthen the muscles on either side of her spine. I'm guessing part of the benefit too would be no hard impact or compressing of discs.
