That time of the month....

This may be TMI... you've been warned.

I got my period today. I feel okay, but usually the crappy part starts on day 2 anyways. Since I joined MFP, I've noticed that my period is consistently where I get lazy, give up on weight loss, stop logging, stop exercising, etc... It usually lasts a week or two, and then I start over. I don't want to do that this time, so I'm going to push through and try to find extra motivation.

It seems like there are a lot of ladies in this group. Presumably over the course of a month, most of us will go through this. How do you all deal with PMS crap on top of detox crap?

  • I know mine is coming next week. Advice? Making a plan for food and exercise and trying to stick to it. Maybe think of non-food comforting items...like renting a good movie...I know that my cravings for sweets amp up during this time so it may take some hyper-vigilance.

I never work out vigorously on my TOM. It creates unwanted things thatwould be TMI if I posted them. I walk and that's about it, usually I miss 3 days of working out.

What about a nice baked sweet potato with ghee and a bt of salt (that's the way I like them, you could add nutmeg and cinnamon too if you prefer sweet)

I try to spend a lot of time out doors or swim, and don't worry about eating extra calories. I also try to hit the gym as much as possible, cause they say you burn more calories. I actually take my time to stretch and meditate if the going is hard.

I try to ignore it and keep on going with my "normal" life. ......easier said than done, but that's my tactic.

I just have to really mind-over-matter it and tell myself that YES I do need a bathroom break right now, + some Advil/heating pad/etc but that's just a part of my hygeine and I have to get over it. I try not to let it be an excuse for anything. As for fatigue, I maybe have some extra coffee :D

Granted when I was in my teens I had such debilitating cramps/nausea/vomiting around that time that this was nearly impossible, but thankful as I've gotten older it's been better! So I do understand the misery that some people have, because it is a very real, gross, annoying, embarrassing thing to have awful TOM's, so be easy on yourself if you need it. Just don't confuse fatigue and self pity with a real need for rest, ya know?

Oh, I know. It's going okay, actually. I took a couple days off from working out, I've been kinda grumpy, and today, even though I'm eating lots, I'M SO HUNGRY.
I ate a huge salad for breakfast, covered in seafood. And immediately afterwards it was like I wanted more food.
But, I haven't slipped yet, which is good. I just have to get through the next two days, and then I'm in the clear.

Mark Sisson says to eat additional carbs as your body readily will use the carbs as energy in the luteal phase. I eat as much as I want according to my cravings during PMS, which typically includes lots of fat, protein, slow carbs especially from sweet potatoes, and some fruit nearly everyday. By the first day of starting my period, I usually eat a whole lot less, as I eat according to hunger. It seems to balance everything out and I don't typically worry about water weight a few days before and a few days after my period starts. For me, I no longer worry about it, especially weighing myself because my weight is very skewed during those days.

I workout typically the 2nd day of my period, after the cramping and fatigue has gone away. But I try to walk daily no matter what. If I don't feel like working out, I don't especially if I'm tired and cranky. I don't believe in pushing my body to do something my mind doesn't want to do because I believe wholeheartedly in rest and relaxation as part of stress management for weight loss. I continue to lose weight, so skipping a few days doesn't seem to be a problem. I used to be a chronic exerciser, doing it 6X a week no matter what but that got old. I like to have fun with workouts whether they're tabata cyclings, HIIT (which I'm not actually supposed to be doing), yoga, or zumba.

Thanks all for the encouragement and thanks Cerebrus for the link. I made it through! It wasn't so bad. I did up my carbs (and eat a whole fistful of (no sugar added) raisins one night... I did skip a day of exercise. But all it all, it actually wasn't as bad as past months have been.
Also, I know we're not supposed to be weighing, but usually the scale goes up a pound or two when I have my period. It's no big deal because it comes off right away, but this time it didn't... not sure if it's related to food or exercise or what, but kind of cool.
