Social binging strategies

Hi all,
I've made it through my first week of MFP without binging at all. My main triggers are being bored at home alone and social situations.
My question are about how you deal with social situation particularly where there is a lot of nibbly food around. I don't seem to have any self control in these situations. I'm going to a wine tasting this weekend followed by a party and I know that there is potential there for a massive blow out. Getting help in advance
Strategies for coping please?

Parties are my big weakness as well. I have trouble stopping at one piece of dessert (last night I had about 8 pieces of pie). I'm super keen on any advice people post here!
At home, keeping my portions in check is no problem. Obviously, I don't want to stop socializing...I just need to figure out how to practice self control in the face of a big table of food at a party.
Just googled some articles that may be helpful:

I have the same issues with public settings or pot lucks etc. I just don't know how to stay away from all the food that is FREE, that I don't usually get and that is right in front of me!!!
Today at work there is red velvet cake, banana bread and bagels. Who brought all this stuff!!! Some days I have more will power than others and I have learned that it is just best for me to avoid all together rather than have one peice as that is were I just fly off the handle and eat everything. I know this doesn't work all the time but it is the worst for me with sweets.
It is only 11:30am but maybe if I say now that I will not have any of the stuff at work today it will stick. That is my plan anyway.
Good luck all!!!!!0 -
another pretty good article:

i think what would work best for me is:
-eat healthy beforehand
-have a 'binge buddy' to keep me accountable and to stop me from eating eight desserts
-staying away from the unhealthy food (out of sight, out of mind)
-bring my own platter of healthy foods (for potlucks)
-have a treat if i KNOW i can do so in moderation, or don't eat the treat at all (no triggers!)0 -
I like the idea of having a binge buddy. I have done this before, told a friend who was on a diet to keep me away from the deep fried nibbles and it did work quite well.
I'm going out for dinner tonight and I will try to eat some healthy food and drink some water before to help me avoid the dreaded shared entree/garlic bread. Going to look up the menu in advance to try and make a healthy choice.
Thanks for the tips guys, I'll let you know how I go tonight and on the weekend0 -
No menu online for tonight but I read an article that says they have 4 different salads. I will attempt to avoid the temptation of a big juicy burger and go for one of these. Will probably get a little crap from my friends about it. Planning on going to the gym before hand so hopefully it'll put me in a healthy mindset0

Honestly, I just make sure I've got enough calories for a binge session. Calorie cycle through the week (helped by the fact that I fast twice a week), so the binge day combined with the low days balances out the week.
Food is an important part of my social life and I don't want to put a spanner in the works if I don't have to. I can still be relatively sensible with choices when I'm out but its nice to know that I can have dessert or birthday cake or chips instead of salad etc.0 -
What is calorie cycling?0

What is calorie cycling?
Balancing calories over a week instead of focusing on a fixed standard daily total. Eg. 10000 for a week could be Monday 1200, Tuesday 1600, Wedneday 800, Thursday 2000, Friday 1100, Saturday 1900, Sunday 1400.0 -

This isn't really the type of binging I'm talking about. If I could stop at one piece of cake I'd be happy.
In good news, I went out for dinner to a burger place last night and had a salad and 3 chips (despite wanting more and having them sitting in front of me for half an hour before the plates were cleared). Massive win!!!0 -

It was a poor example. My food diary today is a much better example of a falling of the wagon binge today. Tomorrow I shall fast and Friday I'll aim to eat clean to balance it all out.
Well done on the willpower with those chips btw!!0 -
Thanks Shelby, hope you get back on track0

I did not read any of the other posts but I make sure I eat before parties and limit myself to one plate of the stuff I really really want so I do not feel deprived. Before choosing I check out everything and then I determine what is worth the calories and what is not.
Keep a glass of water and hand and socialize vs. nibbling or grazing. I know this is late but I can only check post once a week.0
