Great South Run - October 2013??

This is one of the easiest 10m (16k) runs, and goes at a Sunday at the end of October - huge supportive crowds, train station nearby. Bands to cheer you on your way... my d-i-l did it a couple of years ago, and the atmosphere was fantastic!

I NEVER thought I would say this, but is anyone up for signing up to do this in 2013 - it would give me a real goal to aim for, and we could meet up beforehand, maybe walk/run as a group, compare notes on our training, etc. I would probably do a slow jog and walk as I worry about running damaging knees, and at my age I have to watch it!!!

How about it, guys and gels? It would give me a real goal to aim for - getting to my healthy BMI by then, exercising regularly to be strong enough to do it, eating sensibly in preparation. A lot of you are in easy reach of Pompey, if not living there already. I would raise money for 2 charities I am keen on, not one of the big ones already linked to the run, so if we were going to do it as a group, we might need to get a special 'My Fitness Pal' Tshirt in a striking colour made!!!

If you guys do it, I'll come and cheer, but running is my enemy!

Actually do the race rather than moan about the traffic jams? Hmmm. I shall consider this...

I will put this idea in my "procrastination" box. I have never run or walked 10 miles in one go in all my life, although I did cycle the South Downs way for my 50th birthday, hmmm, run / walk GSR for my 70th? Dunno

    Where is it held exactly?

    I think I'll shout I'm in :-)
  • I think that's a great idea.

I don't tend to run but am willing to train up and raise some funds along the way. Do you have a link to sign up 2013?
As for t-shirts : You wont miss me!
I shall be the one messing about with the starter clock whilst no doubt trying to avoid the marshals in some parody of a Benny Hill sketch

    Pete :p

    Hi ya,

Am seriously considering doing it in 2013. Would not be fit enough/run ready this year as new to running & need to get my level up first. Just need to work out whether to travel early on the day, or book in at a B&B or something. All things to be discussed with hubby & finalised lol!

It is held in Portsmouth, and finishes on Southsea sea front

The great plus is it is all flat, no hills to speak of

Brilliant response so far! Watch for TV Coverage on October 28th, so you can get a feel for it. I think the places get booked pretty quickly - they have all gone for this year, though some of the big charities still have some places, I think, but that ties you into raising funds for that charity. They have about 25,000 people running/walking.

Told my son that I was thinking of doing it - his wife (my d-i-l did it two years ago). She had to report in soon after 9.30 or 10.00 and the race started at 11, I think. There were stalls on Southsea Common, near the finish, selling food etc. They get the real athletes, and then the charity/fun runners.

It is not a good idea to go by car, as they are parked on Southsea Common, and cannot leave until the course is cleared - so we walked from the finish to Portsmouth Harbour Station, were on a train home by about 2.15 p.m. and I am told people in cars were not able to get out till after 4!!!

Early in November I will get more details of the entry charges, etc, and then we can think about a training programme like C25k. And, Farway, I have never done anything like this in my life... but there's always a first time, and at my age I need new challenges!!!

So spread the word, and lets see if we can get a good team together!!!

Well Flora, I think you are a start for wanting to have a go! I read an article (think it was in Southern Running Guide) about a gentleman who had completed his latest marathon aged 100 & was planning to run his next at 101, so there is hope for us all!
