The Process

Just found the club, which is a perfect place to post my question! I've been lifting weights on and off for over 2 years. While not accomplishing my goals, I decided to change up my routine. I have researched numerous books and methods, but am perplexed about one basic philosophy...what's best 1) the Body For Life routine of lifting 4-5 sets where you start light and end up with heavier weights (less reps) and only work upper or lower body at one time, OR 2) A total body workout doing 3 sets of 12 reps 3 X per week, alternating w/ cardio on the non-lifting days. I would appreciate your advice!

I'd stick to compound exercises that work several muscle groups at a time, e.g. squats, deadlifts, bench press, etc. and do 3 sessions per week. Check out Starting Strength or Stronglifts for some popular routines.
I've been lifting weights for some time now and will start the Starting Strength 3x5 program tomorrow. I also do cardio, 3-4 times per week, but mainly because it's a necessity to get to work and back home (cycling to work, a 65 minute round trip) and not because I overly enjoy it!
Whether you should do cardio depends on your goals.0
