Headaches

Not sure if this has been asked before, so I applogize if it has. I have been on low carb (30 - 40g) for 3 weeks. I have felt wonderful until the last 2 days. I have had a headache and today it turned into a migraine (I am prone to them, but haven't had any in about 3 months). Has anyone had a similar experience? I am hoping this is temporary!

I get icepick headaches when I am actively losing weight (which, come to find out, is only when I'm low carb - go figure), and I just made the connection to salt the other day. On a hunch and a craving I ate 1/3 tsp directly in the middle of a cluster of headaches and they vanished and didn't come back the rest of that evening. I've been taking opportunities to eat lots of salt and I haven't had any more headaches. Maybe you, too, need more salt on low carb?0

Suffering one right now and was thinking it might be salt. That or water.
Checking my diary my sodium is lower today than usual, as it was last Friday when I also recall having a headache.
Now where's that salt shaker?0 -
Drink some bouillon.0

Drink some bouillon.
I was going to try that but it seems all the stuff in the house is reduced sodium or squeezy stuff which has about 2g carbs per 100ml made up. Just went for pouring it on my hand and licking it off. :-P0 -
Whoops, just noticed I was looking at tomorrow's planned food. Today's sodium was 4000mg.
Maybe time to break out the paracetamol, sometimes too easy to start thinking every ailment is due to diet.0 -
I eat very low carb, based on healthy fats and proteins mostly. My health has improved immensely since changing my diet and eliminating grains, legumes, etc.
I used to get migraines and still get the start of one (I don't "allow" them to fully develop) occasionally. Yesterday, was such a day that one started, so I went home and had a short rest. Exposure to fluorescent lights and computer screens for hours on end can be my trigger.
Find your trigger and then take a rest from it. As the previous person mentioned, it could be a dietary issue or it could be environmental, or a combination. As long as you are eating a HEALTHY low carb diet it wouldn't cause a migraine. Especially since you have been eating that way for a few weeks.0 -
Thanks all! I took a look at my diary for the last 2 days and it was definately low in sodium. Drank some boullion! :happy:0

+1 for salt and water.
The historical logic for salt consumption (which may be wrong...) is that way back when we used to eat ALL the animal, including the broth. Whereas today we tend to discard the juices.
<Homer On>Mmmmm, salty juices ...</Homer>0
