Anyone have Hashimotos and IBS or Gluten allergies? If so, how did you figure it out? Thanks in advance!

  • I went to my physician about being tired ALL the time, constipation, dry itchy skin, etc. and he tested my thyroid first. Diagnosed with hypothyroid, and after years of trial and error, he diagnosed me with Hashimoto's. And then during a check up I mentioned I still felt really tired. So he tested for B12 and it turns out I don't absorb it properly through my stomach. I get shots of B12 about every 2 weeks or so and I have a nasal spray I use in between doses. Then I went back complaining of constipation and a general feeling of crappy, and he tested for the antibodies related to Celiac. I have the antibodies, but no damage was seen in the endoscopy, so I am just avoiding Gluten since some research shows that you can have a gluten intolerance that is not Celiac.

So essentially, talk to your doctor!

Thanks for your reply...I have been talking with my doctor. I was diagnosed 11 years ago right away with Hashimotos. I do take a B12 vitamin as well as Iron. I have just requested to be tested for Adrenal Fatigue as well. I never really looked into my "disease" I just took what the doctor said (hes good and I do like him) and went about taking my meds and being a good patient. But I still have many symptoms so have been doing late night research as I work midnights.
  • I have Hashimoto's, but only figured out after it's borderline hypo-active. I have family history and mainly my hair began falling out a lot. The doctor just did the test to eliminate everything, but came back that I had it

A couple things to consider with IBS, which you may already have done -

Have you done an allergy panel? I found out I was slightly allergic to peanuts/milk/pork, and they would exacerbate what I thought was my IBS.

Have you had a stool culture? I ended up taking a strong antibiotic for an ongoing infection and all my IBS symptoms went away.

I apologize in advance if these suggestions are too simplistic or you have already explored these avenues.
