Strength in Yoga

Is there a craze sweeping the weight reducing nations at the moment? The buzz word out there seems to be "heavy lifting" and if you are not using weights you are planning to fail.
Is no-one aware of the brilliant overall strengthening effect of yoga or are they instantly dismissing this as exercise for weedies? Maybe they should try some?

I don't get it, but I'm biased. I think yoga has many similarities with calisthenics. Chaturanga Dandasana = tricep pushup, Adho Mukha Vrksasana (Handstand) = overhead press, Paripurna Navasana (boat) = sit up, etc. I've seen some amazingly strong people who only do yoga.0

Thank you. It seems the few contributions I have made in the wider forum - particularly when "heavy lifters" are posting are met with such ferocity. I won't be venturing there again!
Thank you Yogini Mary - I also see some parallels between classic yoga poses and bodyweight exercises and have also met some incredibly strong yogis and yoginis who only practice yoga. I feel privileged to have discovered the jewel for myself and sometimes get hurt when I am overenthusiastic with others.
I am learning to be better measured though.0 -
There is definitely strength in yoga - amazing strength - I remember when I started practicing almost 4 years ago, I was pathetic - no upper body strenth, collapsed in plank - modified like crazy. I vividly remember the first time I tried Dolphin Pose - thought I was going to die!!!!!! And side plank didn't happen for a very long time. Now I do these things and am so proud of the strength I've developed and the self confidence to keep going and trying new things. Always growing!! Always getting stronger. I joined my DHs gym a couple weeks ago. When I went through the initial assessment with a trainer, I was so pleased with the things I could do - strength and flexibility. So thankful for yoga!!!!!!0

I have gained more strngth from Yoga than I ever did trying weights and very glad I have discovered it Yoga strengthens the mind, body and soul0

Thank you Tatianna. Trying to add a little Yoga into the bigger discussion forum here brought me largely critiscism and rejection. It even had me wondering if I needed to try something like Insanity or lifting heavy or whatever the current craze is.
It is good to return here and ground myself again and be assured that I am on the right track.0 -
Yeah, there are definitely cliques around here, it's can be a bit like high school!
I'll never be a heavy lifter, a runner, a P90Xer, but I hope to die a yogi!0 -
I'm amazed at the muscles I've built since practicing yoga. My arms have never been buffer!
I also really think it has been a huge factor in my recovery from knee injuries. The crunchiness, while still there, is much less now. And I can do real pushups, ha! I think for a full body workout, you can't beat yoga. The additional benefits, aside from the asanas themselves, makes yoga the only logical choice for me as far as a "preferred" exercise regime. Whole body, mind, soul.0 -

Nectar to my ears. You should read/hear the wrangling going on in the general fitness area of the forum! Such anger and discontent going on out there. TGKvr - welcome - I came to the same conclusion having tried yoga for three years now and it is virtually the only exercvise I do and has become a daily visit to the mat.
I also do body strength exercises such as pullups as I think this is where yoga has a weak area (pulling), but yoga already contains pushing movements within the general sequence of postures. It's great.0 -
Which thread is enraging the bulls? I could read a little drama today.0

Hah ha just do a Search for "Yoga" and read a few where I have been trying to put it out there and the bulls have been asking me to shut the door on the way out!
They're ok though - mostly!0
