I have a bad case of plantar fasciitis in my right foot. I have had the left surgically repaired already. I want to do the couch to 5k program but the first day is a killer for my foot. I stretch and ice. Those dont really help much. Does anyone else have this problem? Is this going to get better? I am considering getting the operation but have to wait until next year. I don't want to wait to run tho. What to do????

I had this mildly a couple of months ago. I found some great exercises on eHow which really eased things. It was all linked to my tight calves, which were also the cause of my shin splints.

I didn't realise that everything was linked together from the calf, achilles and shin.

Here's a link to some info I found helpful, but mine was mild. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I will check it out.
  • Great exercises. Those were basically what my podiatrist had me do a few years ago. They work.

I had it really bad in my right foot as a complication from wearing a brace for over a year. My dr told me to ALWAYS wear shoes. And not like cruddy slippers, real shoes with good support from the second I get out of bed in the morning until I go to bed. I also did those exercises and it took a few months and the most painful cortisone shot EVER (seriously, I screamed so loud the nurse ran in and I never scream) then it finally healed.

I honestly would not start running when you have it. It's essentially the swelling of the ligament on the bottom of the foot. I can't see how running would make it any better. I would definitely consult an MD or a PT before you start.
