It's Protein Day! What are your top 10?

They say women should get .6-1g per pound of lean body mass or your weight (depends who you ask) of protein per day. That puts most of us at least in the ~100g/day category, but MFP sets the default much lower than that. Especially if you are working out, make sure you're getting enough protein. Besides, it keeps you full longer (that's a very good thing)!

(Do you know how to manually override your macros? Carbs, Protein, Fat, etc.?)

Here are my favorite protein sources. What are yours?

1. Fish
2. Eggs
3. Shellfish
4. Greek yogurt/kefir
5. Chicken/turkey/duck
6. Lentils, beans, legumes
7. Braised pork shoulder
8. Tuna fish (canned, extra low sodium)
9. Smooth Operator Peanut Butter
10. Body Fortress whey isolates protein powder (vanilla creme)

What's the protein and clorie content of your powder and do you purchase locally or order? I'm about out of what I use.

I've just bought some impact whey protein powder from myprotein.com because I'm finding it so hard to get enough protein just from the mfp macros!

I get Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey Isolate from Kroger. I hear they also have it at Wal-mart and lots of other places.

    Nutrition in 1 scoop:

    Calories: 130
    Carbs: 1
    Fat: 0
    Protein: 30
    Sodium: 85
    Sugar: 0

I like the vanilla mixed in Greek Yogurt. I haven't been eating it very long, but really do like it. They also make shots that taste like un-set strawberry Jello.

Has anyone else tried the Yoplait Greek 100 yogurt? It doesn't have that "greek yogurt taste" of a lot of the other brands, is fat free and only 100 calories with 10-13 protein grams per cup-which is twice regular yogurt! Vanilla and several fruit flavors too-yummmmm! Try it:)

    Greek Yogurt
    Cheese
    Eggs
    Cottage Cheese
Lean beef (love bottom round roast)

    Beans (particularly black)
Salmon (can't seem to cook it myself, but it's my go to when I eat out)
    Chicken breast
    Tuna

Oh, and one of my naturally thin friends just suggested the egg white egg beaters for breakfast-they really only take as long as toasting a bagel to cook up and I find protein keeps me fuller longer than carbs in the morning. I saute a serving of packaged honey ham in some butter spray then add my eggs and i'm good to go. Today I added a mini babybel light for 50 calories and 6 more protein grams.

Ok, so, if I weigh 112.2 lbs (51kg) I should be eating 67 odd grams of protein a day? doesn't sound like a lot but, I haven't gone there yet to know what it translates to in real food.

Being vegetarian makes it a bit harder to get the full protein amount, but it's something I'm working on. Things I currently have to try and boost protein are:

    Eggs
    Lentils & other pulses
    Cheese particularly Feta cheese
    Yoghurt
    Soya milk
    Nuts and peanut butter

I'm looking into the protein shakes, but am not really sure what's best for me at the moment.

If there are any other veggies out there, this man's site is very useful http://www.nomeatathlete.com/vegetarian-protein/ and it gives details of different types of amino acids that go into making up protein and which sources are best for getting those.

In spite of misinformation on vegetarians not getting "enough" protein, I get all I need (45-75g/day) eating tofu, lentils, nuts, veggies and fruit. I personally feel we don't need the protein we are told we need. There is such a thing as too much protein. It's hard on kidney and liver, too.

Love your picture, Alice! I'm vegan, so don't get to use the "usual suspects" for protein go-tos. Today I'm including peanut butter with my lunch. For dinner, I plan to have lentils or quinoa - always great protein sources!

    steak. Whey powder.

** KANGAROO - this is my fave - the leanest cut of meat, and very high in protein...love it!

Is Kangaroo readily available in the states and elsewhere? I recommend you give it a go - just don't overcook.

    cheers.
