Swimming stroke technique

I last swam competitively 25 years ago and have recently joined masters. Tonight the coach said I need to change my stroke to a straighter arm which I assume is the deep catch technique I have read about on google. It feels very odd, and goes against all I was taught back in the day! I am also concerned about the added stress on my shoulders and have read this technique isnt as sustainable as the scull technique.

Any wisdom or advice??

Ease into it, so as to avoid sudden overuse injury.

The real question is what do you want to achieve? Speed? Fitness? I read about this stroke too, but I haven't changed my stroke because I think my tried and true freestyle works just fine. I'm not competing against anyone, and I just want an overall good workout.
