Kosher meat is expensive...alternatives?

Hello everyone! I've been reading about and talking to people regarding keto, and I'm all on board...in theory. I read the FAQ on /r/keto and set my carb/protein/fat percentages to reflect what I should be eating. I've had a few false-starts. I keep kosher and meat is expensive and hard to get where I live. I don't want to break my pocketbook. I've started eating more fish, which is relatively affordable, but that gets boring after a while. What can I add to my diet?
I'll have 2 eggs, a huge burger patty, and 2 fish fillets in a day. If I stop there I've only eaten half my calories. And I have a salad with olive oil. If I'm going to choose meat meals over dairy ones, I need some variety. Is there a keto guide for people who keep kosher? I feel I'm lacking information to make this work.

How are your macros? Are you getting your fat in?0

I'm eating nuts for fat, plus oil for salad dressing. I get small amounts of fat in other foods I eat, but according to the percentages I fall short.0

Am I right that the dairy/meat restriction would keep you from cooking meats in butter? Can you use coconut oil for those? I'm betting that would be pretty yummy for cooking fish. From what I read here (http://blog.beliefnet.com/homeshuling/2012/03/guess-whats-kosher-for-passover-this-will-change-your-life.html) Spectrum organic coconut oil is kosher.
If you drink coffee, you could try bulletproof coffee to add fat to your diet. In a blender, mix 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, 1 tablespoon coconut oil or MCT oil, and if you're inclined a bit of sweetener (I use a pinch of Stevia). Some of the recipes you'll see online say to use Kerrygold butter but it's not kosher - I believe Land O Lakes unsalted is, though. Bulletproof coffee is pretty appetite-satisfying for me. I know it sounds weird and freaky but the end product satisfies latte cravings for me.
Since you can eat eggs and butter together, if you can learn how to whip up a good hollandaise sauce you can use it on a lot of stuff. Hollandaise goes really well on vegetables like asparagus, cauliflower, and broccoli. It's possible to make hollandaise in single serving portions once you get the hang of making it. Here's Alton Brown making hollandaise, the actual hollandaise making starts at about 2:00. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfqPNA3yKDw
The only problem with trying to rely on nuts for fat is that they're pretty carby and can be heavy in Omega-6, which isn't great for you.0 -
You are correct regarding not mixing meat and dairy. I can use coconut oil (we have a big tub of it) and it's my oil of choice. I've been trained not to eat loads of fat, which makes getting the fat in a challenge. I've been cooking my meat sans oil in a non-stick pan since it puts out it's own oil. (and it's less messy) I figured since the meat does put out oil that it won't soak any up...should I change this? The burger meat is 80/20, so it's pretty fatty. When I'm not eating meat I've started eating cheese. I always ate it on crackers, but now that I'm off carbs for a week+ I find I don't miss the crackers.
The bulletproof coffee...I've never heard of that. It does sound weird and freaky, but I'll give it a whirl. I'm up for trying most things. I've been cooking my eggs in the leftover meat fat, but I could use butter. That's what I used prior to going keto. The nuts are almost gone so I'll stop buying those and see if I get more purple. I have a fondness for nuts, but you're right...they add more carbs than I'd care to have, at least at this point. Will check out the Hollandaise sauce.
Thanks for a comprehensive response. This has helped me a great deal.0 -
I generally pour the fat over my meat after I'm done cooking, or pour it over a side of veggies.
Since you're in the reddit group, I'm guessing you know about /r/ketorecipes. Not everything has bacon there.
I think all of us go through a struggle with the shift from 'fat is bad' to 'fat is awesome and your body will only hold on to extra weight if it feels deprived'.0
