what do you think of the show??
As long as a plane doesn't fall from the sky and hit me when the power goes out... I'd say my odds are 96% survival, it's all been worked out already.

I think it's really good, however I fear it will go sci-fi just like lost did. Jehrico was the best survival type show, but the dumb writers strike years ago ruined it!!

Yes, it is (mostly) an american thing.
It's for people who have too much time and money on their hands. It's fun stuff to do though.
I'm under the impression that there are 1000 more vital skills to learn (right now) like knowing how to buy a house properly to prevent you and your family from being evicted and contributing to the financial crisis that will lead to the said apocalypse (although, this is admittedly not nearly as fun).

So you're assuming people who plan for disasters haven't already learned this, and lots of other skills, being that it is the the reality of now, and not some undetermined future. Your thinking is that people just ignorantly stockpile 'stuff', and leave it at that? Very black and white of you.
If it ever comes down to catastrophic scenarios, I would be as worried about "possessing" anything of value as not possessing anything, because it would make you a primary target for anyone without anything to live on, who has nothing to lose (and that would be a lot of people).

If you're waving around your goods, then yes, you are a target. But most people who truly make long-term preps know better than to advertise their stockpiles.

If you believe having no possessions, and living as a refugee is somehow more noble and survivable, by all means, see how far that will get you, and how hungry you'll end up. I'm sure FEMA will be there to aid you.
I'm saying that it is for people who have too much time and money on their hands, as this is everyday life for some people in our world.
For examples of people surviving with guns in a world without food, water and electricity, you can just look at the poorest parts of Africa to see what it's like.

I don't understand how being prepared for calamities is such a snooty, unrealistic lifestyle. People buy health, life, and car insurance to cover them in times of need. Having essentials set aside for major calamities is no different.

I believe there's a parade going on in DC right now.... how about you go rain on that one for a bit.

and no it's not for people that have time and money on their hands. it for people that want to make sure that if something bad happens in their world, they HAVE money, and HAVE stuff so that they can survive! i mean, if you were unable to work for 6 mo what would you do? now imagine if not only you lost your job, but you lost your stuff? and your neighbors lost their stuff? and your money was gone because the bank is gone? i mean this isn't because we're bored, LOL!!

and i have zero money. but, i do make sure i buy something BIG yearly. this year it's a water filter that is small enough to take with me. i can use it for camping AND should i find myself in a position later that i need it to survive, i have it. my food storage has been built up over months to years. and all of it is either freeze dried or dehydrated. i can use it in every day cooking if i want. it's actually really good! it's called Thrive, by shelf reliance.

i have some gas here, but if my car won't work it won't matter. our plan is to head west, toward mt weather. basically move along the appalachian trail. the kids and i hike now. we have backpacks, camelbaks, head lamps, weapons, tools, ways to cook, camp, etc.

we had to evacuate for Ivan in 2004. it was a huge giant horrid hurricane that hit the panhandle of FL. we HAD to leave. board up the house and go. we took enough with us for 2 weeks and took what would could like we were never going to return. THAT is the point of being prepared. luckily we had a home to come back to. there were TONS of people who did NOT. even right now, there are people in NY and NJ and other places who have nothing. i remember with Ivan, when it came up the east coast it caused mudslides and flooding in places like CT, and MA. people up north lost everything because of a hurricane that hit right where *I* lived...... and yet i had a home to come back to...........

Be careful, storing canned goods can get you on a terrorist watch list. No joke!

And why are they being called preppers now? Survivalists sounds so much cooler!

Anyway, no, right now we aren't prepared. I'd have to rely on a lot of luck to get myself and family someplace safe and to get the provisions we would need there to survive. When your food money is all the money there is every week, well, so much for surviving.

It would depend on whether I was at home in a fairly-isolated part of Scotland, with the kitchen garden, the loch for clean water (and refrigeration!), the back-up generator, and the oil-powered Aga, not to mention a shotgun and plenty of game birds, or in Central London. In the latter case, I suspect things would turn pretty ugly pretty fast, though the basic supplies would be OK for a week or two, and I could probably rig some sort of power-generator and water-purification system. In the former, I'd say a pretty long time. I've been learning to shoot game over the last couple of seasons and am becoming a decent shot, and the garden is pretty productive, so food wouldn't be an issue, and we're out of the way enough that no-one who didn't know to look would be likely to find the house. There's also masses of firewood available for heating/cooking/boiling water and clean water (and fish, now I come to think of it!) in the loch.

Who would be a lone wolf and how many would try to form a community or possibly just a small group of 5 adults or less?

I have plans with a small community of about 5 adults or less. Until we get to the meetup point I'd be mostly solo.

Lone wolves won't do so well. They gotta sleep sometime. Small groups of 10-15 is ideal, as long as everyone can bring skills to the table.

This would be considered a "calorie deficit". The energy required to prepare wouldn't be worth the calories gained from useful parts. It'll be better used as a stress-reliever (cuddling).

Well my brother shot a 10 point buck up on our hunting land an hour ago... looks like my food source for survival is looking on the up... now giving myself 97% chance of survival.
  • Me? Personally? I probably couldn't.

But would it be wrong to use MY assets into getting help? Always works when I have car trouble...

Steal some of that off-road bio equipment... those 4-wheelers will come in handy when we start pirating people.

Being a Lone wolf is bad and its especially dangerous for a female( think mad max or even book of eli). 10-15 adults preferably people you knew before hand so there are less trust issues. I would like to remind people that despite what the movies tell us (and the walking dead) the end of the world is not a good time to be getting pregnant. Please remember to pack condoms in your Bug out bags lol.

    Edited cause I cant spell

10/4. I'll load up one of the 6-quad trailers....and head out. We'll have quads to spare. Will bring some badass generators too. Just work on fuel supplies.....

The fuel comes from shooting and looting

LOL at the end of the world I think you could just refer to it as harvesting fuel

Yeah don't go Book of Eli and be a lone wolf, you will either get sloppy or lonely and end up dead. Also wouldn't go to where all the unprepared people are, that is going to be so unorganized; you will all just stand around trying to figure *kitten* out until my gang of bandits come in and steal all your stuff. Best bet is the small group.

How would you keep that meat without electricity to run a refrigerator? How long until refugees and other outdoorsman/ hunters/ survivalists start scouting out your camp with all of that shooting you intend to do for harvesting game? Camp fires and cooked meat will attract lots of other people with guns who are thinking the same thing you are - "let's all head to the woods".

Not knocking your plan, just throwing out ideas.

Two great books to read, illustrating all of the challenges following a major, life-altering calamity :

The Patriots - James Wesley Rawles

One second After - William R. Forstchen
