My doctor put me on this sodium restriction b/c while I do not have high cholesterol, I have a form of genetic heart disease. She told me it can't be controlled through diet & exercise, however it definitely helps. She also told me to eat less that 7g of saturated fat.

My question: Is anyone else in this group on this sodium restriction & what is your diet because I am having the hardest time trying to eat 1900 calories & stay within my sodium & saturated fat goals.

Thank you in advance!

Hey there lady, I am not on any such restriction, but I would suggest doing some research regarding your condition and looking at some natural alternatives. I have found that drs tend to guide based on textbook, but there is strong research that sometimes contradict using natural alternatives that help many.

    Just a thought.

Have you considered an all plant based diet? Watch Forks Over Knives (I think it's on Netflix). I think that might give you somewhere to start!

Thanks Lucia. I'm sure there is a lot of textbook on it but I read that it is recommended for African Americans with a history of heart disease to get on a restricted diet. I'm just trying to reach my TDEE & right now, I'm eating about 1200-1300 because I don't want to go over my sodium. If I eat more, I go over on my carbs. I wonder which is worse!

I eat that too minus the flax. I'll have to look into that.

I've read eating lots of food with potassium helps counteract the sodium so maybe talk to your doctor about that and maybe you can have more if you eat lots of other things with potassium

I've never worried about sodium and thought much about it, but lately I find that I bloat a lot more when my sodium is up. So I"ve been trying to reduce but it's soooo hard!!! Since I want to keep my protein intake up, I eat a fair bit of meat but like even tonight I had rotisserie chicken which is *brutal* for sodium! And deli meat too...and of course, any processed foods (which I limit anyway). I almost always go over 2500 a day...still looking for strategies myself!!!

In Canada, all doctors recommend 1500mg of sodium/day max. Try to stay away from bottled sauces, ketchup, BBQ sauce, etc., fast/processed food. And drink lots of water!

Yeah, you will pretty much have to stay away from processed anything. If you are only eating 1200 calories, you really ought to be way below 1500 mg. Does your doctor know how calorie restricted you are? The 2500 max recommendation in the US is for people eating 2000 calories per day, so if he's recommending restricting to 1500 for a normal person, you need to be below 1200 if you are eating 1200 calories.

I'd suggest lots of fresh or frozen fruits and veggies (canned have added sodium, and some frozen do, too). That may help you cut your carbs, too. Meat is fine if you can eat it without added salt, but it also has a lot of saturated fat, so not sure about your sat fat limit.

Did your doctor not suggest a diet?

I have a heart murmur and was diagnosed with high blood pressure which I control through my diet. If you avoid processed foods and stick to a plant based diet along with lean proteins like fish, chicken, and turkey, you shouldn't have any problems staying under 1500 mg of sodium per day. Also, as someone else mentioned before, potassium counters the effects of sodium so make sure that you are getting somewhere at least near the recommended daily value of 4500 mg per day. It will help keep you from retaining excessive amounts of water. The other thing that helped me was to avoid sauces and keep red meat down to a minimum. I have actually gotten to the point where I barely season my food with salt because my taste buds of changed tremendously. It takes some time to get used to, but it can be done.
