    Hi Paulina,

Your circumstances sound very challenging indeed. Medication that may do us good or be vital, can also deal us a difficult hand.....side effects. I find too, that the less I physically do, the more I believe i need to eat.....restlessness and boredom I'm sure.

It's good to see you on this post. I hope that you will still find some suggestions helpful. And if nothing else, someone to talk to who can empathise with how you may be feeling.

Do you know what sort of help you require? Have you tried discussing your concerns with your health professionals?

Hello Paulina... so tough when medicines tamper with normal hunger patterns.

I've been told that hunger cycles every two hours, and that within that there is a greater hunger for only 20mins after which the pangs pass and don't come back with vengance until the next two hour cycle.

I'm not totally convinced about the 2 hour bit, but the 20 mins part is kind of right I think. I find it helps abate my urge to eat if I make a cuppa and sit and drink it slowly - then if I'm still hungry after that then I let myself have a snack. It takes me at least 20 mins to drink a hot drink, so often this helps and the urge to eat has passed.

Not sure if it will work if you have meds messing your appetite, but it's worth a try. :)

    Best wishes,

    Sal

    Hi Sal,

Not heard this before........I shall bare this in mind. Where did you get this advice? The 2 hour thing certainly sounds familiar. I have a tendency to give in when the craving for something edible gets too strong. I get migraine and nausea when hunger gets overwhelming i.e. if I miss a meal or don't eat enough. I shall see if I can spot the pattern.

I can't remember where I read that... one of those useless rumours perhaps? Except I think that often the 20mins thing is true.....

So if I'm hungry (and I have eaten in the last 3 hours) then I try to distract myself for 20 mins before eating anything. If I'm still hungry, then perhaps I really AM hungry and need a snack.

However if it's longer than 3 hrs since I ate, and I feel hungry, then I'll eat an apple or something. Or a bit of toast and vegemite....

This sounds like the exact symptoms I get for hypoglycemia aka low blood sugar. I can only go 3 hours before I have to eat to raise my blood sugar. Fruit must be balanced with protein or the sugar spikes and crashes. When the nausea hits it is very intense so ginger tea made with sliced ginger and lipton tea settles my stomach quickly with what I am eating. I never eat sugar but when I use to eat it before MFP I would drink a coke or piece of candy. Orange juice instantly raises Blood sugar even a drink of it.

I have tendency to migraines, and low blood sugar is often a trigger.... especially if coupled with dehydration!

However I try to be careful about eating foods with a high GI....... Yet, just as you say, sugary foods are digested more slowly if they are eaten with other food types (eg protein or fat).

Hiya, Thanks for your advice on this. I'm sure that my weight gain is very much connected with my inability to eat meals as far apart as my husband. He laughs and says I'm always thinking of my tummy!! I explain, that the reason I like to know what we'll eat for tea or how long he wants to wait for food ....is because I then know if I'll be able to last that long.... or if I need a snack. I hate needing snacks, but if I don't I get migraine sensations, confussion, nausea, dizziness and 'spacey' feelings, fatigue, irritability and I start to see differently / poorly, (linked to feeling dizzy I think). Today is an example. I had porridge with a small sprinkling of sugar and tea at 8.30AM. By 10 I was peckish and I became hugry very quickly after this. I ate an apple and a pear about 11AM as was feeling giddy and sick. This put off the feelings again but needed lunch soon after. xx
