Cures For The Low Carb Flu

Hi everyone. I am starting induction again today. This is my 4th time. Each time I am unable to sustain low levels (below 50g) because I get the carb flu. Boy do I get it. Achy limbs, dizziness, blurry vision, you name it. Each time it is so awful I can't last for more than 3 days. At the 3 day mark I am literally so ill that I tear into anything with carbs to make the limb pain stop. Scary huh?!?

Nevertheless, I am trying it again. This time I am drinking WATER like it's the only beverage on earth (6 glasses so far today). I'm feeling okay, but I am afraid the flu could be lurking. Does anyone who gets the "flu" have any other things besides the water I can do to ward off the symptoms?

Your advice would be much appreciated.

  • I drink salty broth, too, making sure I get 3-5 grams of celtic sea salt in every day. This morning I felt awful so I even salted my eggs more than normal.

    I supplement with
400 mg magnesium cirtrate at night (to help with digestion)
99 mg potassium citrate (so I get enough potassium with all the water I am drinking)
500 mg evening primrose oil (to help balance the hormones as I lose fat and estrogen is released)
5,000 IU of Vitamin D (because I am deficient)
    and my Opti-woman multi vitamin

I do not take any other supplements.

Also, if you are taking any kind of fat-burners, they don't recommend taking supplements with some of those, so be careful and consult a doctor if you are concerned about supplementation.

It sounds like you get the "flu" pretty badly too. What are your symptoms?
  • Okay, not to be gross, but you asked.

I have the runs, a colossal headache, no energy, want to go to bed and sleep forever,
    :)

    Does that help?

I use keto-stix and I make very sure that they are not too purple. If I test too purple in the morning, I up my water intake a lot.

    Are you testing?

I have used the sticks. I never get to the darkest purple. However, I use them only the first few days to see if I'm actually in ketosis. So maybe I should monitor more closely. Thanks.

To be honest you just have to play through the pain. If you carb up then you are really just prolonging it. Mine lasted like 3 weeks and I thought I was gonna die. Then I did good for like 2-3 month but Nov has been hard on me and I find myself carbing up.... like I will be low carbing it and then feel horrible and then feed my carb monster and the feel horrible. Its an ugly cycle. the best thing to do is just get past it and dont recarb. Somehow I cant seem to do that.

Day 3 is always the worst. My best advice is to plan for day 3 and 4 to be on days you don't have to do anything or see anybody. Call in sick. Keep your eye on the prize... by day 5 you should feel fantastic. A lot of it is dehydration and low salt. So, yes, drink lots of water and broth. Don't worry about calories for the first week. Eat protein and fat whenever you are hungry or slightly hungry. Keep yourself full. Stay away from pot lucks and family dinners. LOL!!
  • I don't use the sticks everyday, only if I am not feeling well. I can usually tell I am dehydrated without them, but I have heard so many scary stories about low hydration on this diet that I like to see how far I have to go. If I am symptomatic, I test and then I keep testing until I feel better and I am not so dark purple, whichever comes first. :)

Full salt chicken broth (or beef I suppose) and dill pickles. The pickles really saved me. Also, make sure your potassium and magnesium levels are in check--low potassium can make you feel like crap too.

I make sure to take plenty of potassium (which I have a deficiency of anyways) and magnesium since it flushes out with all the water. I also have literally licked salt out of the palm of my hand. When I'm at work with a pounding headache and no broth in sight, heck yes I have ground up some salt (I have a little pre-filled grinder in my drawer) and licked it out of my hand lol! Within about 5min it seems to do the trick

You can just suck on a rock salt I do when I get a headache... and when I am coming down off my carb high I also get to suck on one before I go to bed ... I tend to wake up with headaches in the middle of the night
