Biotin?

How much Biotin does everyone take? I picked some up now that I am dealing with hair loss.

And when do you take it? With our program we have to take:

Morning: 2 vitamins

Afternoon: 1 Calcium

Evening: 1 Calcium

In addition I take B12 once a week and Vitamin D once a week.

So I am just wondering if it's ok to pair up the Biotin with one of the other vitamin/supplements I take?

Erin, I have my surgery tomorrow, so I am not speaking from post-op, but when I brough it up with my surgeon for after surgery, she said that it was fine to take as long as it was not at the same time as the calcium. Something to do with absorbtion. I would check with you doctor since I know that they all have different opinions.

I don't take biotin, and my doctors never mentioned it. We are supposed to take 2 multivitamins, and 3 calcium, spread out of course.I also take a third multivitamin, just in case, and a B12, iron and D3 every day. The only thing I should be better with is the calcium, because they get spread out so much during the day. I haven't had any hair loss problems though. My iron gets checked every ten days to two weeks, and so far it hasn't dropped at all since before surgery.

8:00 a.m. - nexium (was on it daily for years pre-surgery and it is not required post-surgery, but I am terrified of developing an ulcer, so I still take it religiously every day!)

10:30 a.m. - pre-natal vitamin and vitamin B12 (again, not required to take the B12 post-surgery, however, I am vegetarian and lacking in my B12)

1:00 p.m. - feramax (iron) and vitamin C (I take this form of iron as I don't absorb any other forms whatsoever and I am somewhat anemic; the vitamin C, though not required, is to attempt to fend off those nasty colds)

4:00 p.m. - 1000MCG OF BIOTIN (not required, but has helped immensely with hair STRENGTH, not so much growth, and has helped prevent the thinning and falling out, as well as strengthened my nails)

    7:00 p.m. - 2 calcium citrate with vitamin D3 + an additional vitamin D3

    11:00 p.m. - 2 calcium citrate with vitamin D3

I feel like a walking drug store, LOL!

the only areas I lack are my B12 and iron.... and the B12 is controlled with my supplement, iron is not. I do notice if I have missed ANY of my supplements, my body just 'lags' and gets weak. I try to be super duper religious to taking my vitamins on schedule! :)

I take 5000 of biotin every morning with my Celebrate Multi vitamin. I don't really know if the biotin helps with hair loss or not since I have been taking it 3 months pre op and am 6 months post op so for a total of 9 months I have been taking it. I have come to the conclusion that nothing really will help with the hair loss after WLS. I took biotin, bought special shampoo to help not have hair loss and have been getting 100 grams of protein daily for at least 3 months now. I read an article online that the hair loss happens from the few days right before surgery and right after surgery so even though you don't start loosing the hair till maybe 3 months out till 6 months out it is due to those first few days before and after surgery when a person isn't getting hardly any protein in their systems. Of course, anytime you have surgery you loose some hair due to what they use to knock you out with I have heard.
My hair loss has slowed down some recently and I am thankful I had thick hair to begin with. I did continue to color my hair after surgery and my hair dresser said this wouldn't affect the hair loss. I only wash it every other day also and bought a special brush to help brush the hair product out every night but doesn't pull the hair out at the same time.
    Good luck!

I take 5000 mcg a day. While I honestly don't notice any big difference in my hair falling out (though it has pretty much stopped now at 7 months post op), I definitely notice what the Biotin does for my nails. My nails are much stronger than before. I had stopped taking it for about 3 months, and I started to notice my nails were becoming weaker, so I've started taking it again. It just takes a while to notice the effects since your nails grow slowly.

I was taking 5000 once a day. I recently stopped taking it since my hair loss has stopped now and I have tons of new growth coming in. But, biotin encourages hair growth...everywhere...if you get my drift. I was tired of finding hairs where there should be none!
