Oh my and I thought my life with thyroid issues was rough. I was Diagnosed 3 years ago with graves disease. I spent 2 years trying to balance the hyper symptoms with medication and finally had my first Radioactive Iodine treatment in 2011. 2 months later had to get a second dose as the first did nothing for me or my thyroid. Today I am hypothyroid with the second RAI treatment working quite well to kill off the thyroid. I start replacement thyroid hormones tomorrow morning with my first dose of synthroid.
I've also got low Vitamin D levels. I'll get my numbers tomorrow as they have not posted yet to my med records online.0 -
Hi there, thanks for your reply! Im sorry your going through hypothyroid too .. Its not at all fun, winter is horrible for me and it doesn't seem to matter what I do and don't do to be able to feel better.. Im taking a high dose of vitamin d3 and vitamin b 12 hoping it could help relieve some of the hypothyroid symptoms.. Im also on wellbutrin sr. I wake up at 3 am to take my synthroid and go back to bed and have breakfast around 4;30am..0

I have trouble when I am ill, which I have been in Oct., Nov. and Dec of this year. Yuck. I have another disease that prevents me from taking vitamin D and from exercising a lot. Since I added cytomel twice a day to my meds (already on synthroid) I have been feeling very good. I don't have snow and it does not get hot here, so I miss a lot of the problems that others have. I know when my thyroid (I only have 1/2 left) is off that I feel really bad and I can understand a little about how it is for you. I forgot to mention that I gained 5 lbs in 3 weeks this fall.0

I've been diagnosed and under treatment for a year and a couple of months, and I definitely have it harder.
My symptoms have gotten worse, specially the feeling of being constantly cold.
So I have it harder to cope, I feel I need more comfort foods than ever, and I can't stop drinking soup or hot tea with milk. I don't know why, but this winter is being a lot tougher than last one. It has to be because my levels have to be really bad right now, even on medication. I'll find out in January with my lab results. Or maybe it's because of the fat in my body being lower than ever (in a healthy range)
But yes, it's really hard. Yesterday I was standing in front of the heater and I didn't feel the heat coming from it. I feel I have slower reflexes when it comes to touching something hot. I let the hot water (just hot, not boiling hot) running and put my hands in to wash them and it took me considerably longer to feel the burning sensation.
Weird, really weird. There are days I feel more normal and I don't feel so terribly cold though.
Sorry to hear you're all going through a tough winter too ;(0 -
Thank you all so much for replying! I hope we all find relief soon!0

Do any of you take like vitamin b 12 or vitamin d3? I read up on the vitamin b 12 helping to aleviate hypothyroid symptoms.. I started taking vitamin B 12 chews that my friend had givin me for my birthday and WOW they are really yummy and he said only take 1 to 2 of those a day and not 3 or 4 lol! They are tasty! Its gonna be interesting to see how my levels come out after taking the Vitamin b 12, its a pretty hefty dose of 2,500 mcgs but its probly what I need cause of the low dose of synthroid which is only 50 mcgs0

I definitely have a harder time in winter, my joints hurt more, I'm colder and with the darker days comes a darker mood. All of those things coupled with the delicious foods that are hard to pass up making the weight loss journey even harder; it can be very difficult sometimes. I have found that trying to manage each of those things individually, regardless of it being a symptom of my Hashimoto's, helps me out a lot.
I get cold quicker so I wear thermals and sweaters to work (even though I work in an office it's still never quite warm enough for me). My joints ache horribly, so I keep some Advil on hand and pop one every 8+ hours if I need it. My mood gets dark, I call my husband and he gives me the giggles.
Keep your head up, it'll get better soon.0 -
Yeah WINTER SUCKS!!!!0

Ha! I thought I was the only one or that it was in my head that winter was so much harder. I'm ALWAYS frozen to the bone. I'm not even very thin. When I get so cold I get so cranky. The only thing that warms me is running but I don't have much more than 30-60 mins a day for that. I get super hot and love every second of it and dread cooling back down in the winter.0

Oh no dear, its not in your head! You are not alone!0

If you feel horrible all the time it likley means your levels have never been right.
What lab tests are being done and how often? If your doctors are dosing you based on TSH labs only that's probably the reason you feel horrible. They should be testing your free (not total) T3 and free T4, and dosing so that you're in the top 1/3 of the range for both.
Also, what meds are you on? Are you taking a T4-only supplement like Synthroid or Levothyroxine? If your body has any issues converting T4 into T3 (the active thyroid hormone) and you're taking a T4 only supplement, then your T3 levels may be too low. See above re: getting your free T3 tested! If it's too low you can add a synthetic T3 like Cytomel, or many people feel better taking a natural thyroid supplement that contains both T3 and T4 (like Nature Thyroid or Armour).0 -
Finally got my numbers and the are so totally hypo, it's a wonder I can function LOL TSH is over 100, Free T3 is 1.62, free T4 is less than 0.25. Vitamin D is 16. AND I've been taking Vitamin D for the last 3 months. I'm doubling that on Dr recommendation and adding in a B complex. My Vitamin D will stay low until I get the TSH under control again. Despite that crappy numbers I actually feel pretty good BECAUSE I know why I feel like crap. I know how to fix it and just have to have the patience to get there. After being on the roller coaster of hyperthyroidism for 3 years, this is almost a relief. I'll make it and I know it will take time. Right now for me it's getting closer to normal more than weight loss. If I can maintain without gaining anymore I'll be happy as I work to get my levels closer to normal and comfortable.

My results came back today and my tsh is 0.04 and my free t4 is .92 shes saying im hyper but I sure as hell don't feel hyper! I called back and left a message to ask her to run more than 2 test! I mean geeezzz I always thought t 3 was our main hormones and not just the t40

I'm a victim of the weather, but it isn't seasonal. If it's bright and sunny, I have energy to spare once I pry myself out of bed. If it's grey and gloomy, I have no energy and fall asleep at the drop of a hat. The only exception is if it's snowing. But, I think that's because light reflects off the white snow making it seem brighter outside.0

I can totally relate. I feel much the same way. Rainy days just shut me down.
Don't like the rain, but my garden sure does! LOL!0 -

Oh dear. This sounds like me!
I was born with a thyroid, but had it removed at 13 due to a cancer scare. I was dosed very high and had a very low TSH like you and felt great... for a period. Until, BOOM. TSH of 0, in the ER with tachycardia and irregular heart rate FROM the TSH, weight gain from too high cortisol from my adrenal glands overcompensating for so much thyroid hormone with no thyroid to regulate, etc.
The unfortunate thing about thyroid is that we are all guinea pigs... thyroid is still being heavily studied, and in the scheme of medicine, is a fairly new diagnosis. It seems like now, everyone and their mother has an issue with thyroid, but a decade ago, most doctors wouldn't have even checked thyroid levels unless there was a goiter or nodule.
Thyroid has T1, T2, T3, T4, and that's not even taking into account things like RT3 or TSH (from the pituitary). Did you even know you should produce T1 and T2? You probably wouldn't, because doctors don't know how to test for it yet. They're not entirely sure the role they play, but obviously know enough about how TSH, T3, and T4 (and to a point, RT3) affects people.
So, in regards to your statements... intolerance to heat/cold is a notorious thyroid issue symptom. As for issues with reading "hyper" (as "no thyroid people," we can't ever technically be anything but hypo... but can "manifest" hyper symptoms or levels), it's possible your adrenals are throwing things off. I'd recommend looking into getting them checked (push for a saliva test... blood tests are infamously inaccurate). Poor adrenal function has VERY similar symptoms to hypothyroidism.0 -

TSH can be quite suppressed in people who are taking thyroid supplements; plus it's a pituitary hormone - therefore it's just not a very good measure of thyroid function.
If your free T4 is that low you are NOT hyper! I would ask for a free T3 test to see where that is at. To be honest that looks HYPO to me, but it really depends where your free T3 is at.
Do you have any symptoms? Keep in mind that many symptoms are the same for both - heart palps, fatigue, sleep issues, headaches etc.
Like a PP said, there are so many other thyroid hormones as well, and there just isn't enough research yet on what all of them do. But there's enough info out there to know that you should NOT be dosed and treated on TSH results.0 -
Yeah I feel like hypo and its driving me nuts! My wellbutrin isn't even working that good anymore Im soo pissed! I got home early from work and gonna call and request more test run, im sick of this crap0

I hope that you get some help horselady34:flowerforyou: . That sounds absolutely miserable:noway: . I really hate it when Drs won't explain what they are thinking or relate your numbers to you:grumble: .
I have problems all winter with being cold, hair falling out, low vitamin D and SAD (seasonal affective disorder) [which is the blue feeling that you get in the winter due to not getting enough sunlight] I so understand what you and the others are saying.
Let's hope that we all make it through this winter intact:laugh: :drinker:0 -
Awww Thank you Notabrat1! You would Not believe what she had said ( I didn't personaly talk to her cause I wasn't home ) so she had left a message saying the T 3 blood test does NOT help    I mean WTF thats the one of the most potoent hormone for heavens sake!! COME ON there are lots of test to take for the thyroid function and not just T4 and TSH! I think I need to try to find another doc but no one will work with me and im pissed.. then she said we'll just take the vitamin D test in another 2 months Well im not waitng! I hate being cold too and the sad really sucks :sad:0

YES, I FREAKING HATE WINTER!!!!!!
My thyroid levels are stable and at a healthy level, but if I don't see daylight, I get tired and sad. The cold stinks, but the darkness is what I really can't stand.
I also find myself eating a lot more in the winter. The last few days have been delicious.
You know what else sucks about winter? Less activity, less fresh food (like from farmers markets and such), and more pressure around the holidays to be superwoman.
BOO!!!!
I am very much looking forward to Spring!0 -

Yes, you need to find a doc that will test your T3. My doctor tests my Free T3 and Free T4 every time.0 -
To all those like me who can't fight the health system/their docs much, try to carry a thermic bottle with you. I try to have hot tea with me all the time. It helps a lot to get a sip while I'm outdoors and it gives me a mood boost.
Good luck and vibes to everyone!0
