How to handle being at a conference

Ok, so I show up at the 3 day conference and glance at tomorrow's menu: continental breakfast, soup and sandwich lunch, cookies and icecream break and Italian for dinner. Being new to low carb what's the best way to handle this? I hope all 3 days are not like this!

Is there a restaurant in your hotel, or nearby? If so, plan on picking up your special order meals there. Most hotel restaurants are very accomadating and might even let you pre-order to-gos for specific times so you can just pick them up at the appointed meal times.
If there aren't any other viable options, hop in a taxi to the nearest grocery store.
And if all else fails, do your best with the menu options, and when you get back home you'll be back on track. 3 days won't end your success!0 -
I would find the nearest store and buy packs of nuts, hard boiled eggs, sugar free jello packs, lettuce and deli roast beef as back up food. Keep the nuts on you at all times.
Breakfast: Hopefully the continental breakfast will include hard boiled eggs. Many hotel complimentary breakfasts do. Eat those.
Lunch: Eat the inside of the sandwich. Hopefully the soup will be one you can eat. Eat nuts.
Cookies and ice cream break: Go for a walk if you can (back to your room to eat...LOL!). Enjoy the beverages. Eat more of the nuts in your pocket. If the temptation is more than you can handle, choose the ice cream.
Dinner: Salad... lots of salad with lots of cheese. If they serve meat with the pasta, eat that. If you can get seconds, get more salad and more meat. I was at a conference recently where the dinner was pizza and salad. I ate the toppings off of 3 slices and pizza and lots of salad with lots of cheese.
Don't worry about calories. Eat as much of what you can eat to stave of hunger and temptation.0 -
I'd go the takeaway packets of nuts/eggs/cheese options.
If you are sufficiently low-carb then you should be able to get through the day on these without significant hunger (and be able to grab something better at the end of the day) ... not to say there won't be temptation ... "Just one" of those sandwiches is the start of a slippery slope, good luck ...
I'd pack nuts and some heavy cream to lob in my coffee ... I can get through a typical day on this.
I'd also have the ice cream, because, fundamentally, I have the mental age of a 10 year old and I like ice cream a lot.0 -
Thanks the suggestions! I have been doing so well that I just don't want to slip up, but I also realize that these times will happen and even if I can't manage what I have for been doing, at least I can get right back on the plan as soon as I get home. I did bring 3 muffins in a minute with me so that will help! :happy:0

You may find the venue has something they can offer you, many obtain their catering from elsewhere and they can special order. It doesn't cost anything to ask0

Awful venue. No protein on continental breakfast. Soup was a bean and ham soup. Ate yogurt and fruit for breakfast - big mistake. Had a stomach ache for most of the day. At least dinner was salmon and brocolli with a nice mixed green salad. Being new to low carb is hard here, but have learned that I will plan ahead and bring what I can eat! On a side note one of the conference arrangers asked why I wasn't eating the menu and I explanined an dshe said to make sure I put that on the evaluation and that willbe something they look into!0

Beaware of the food that is being placed in front of you then if the food is not to your needs push it away. While you are at conference just maintain your weight loss then when you come back home you focus on losing weight again.0

Hey, that's progress Salmon and salad a result ...
Chicagolopez has a point with these things, the best result is probably maintenance and damage limitation.0 -

^this is what I was gonna suggest^0 -
A late reply I know but I thought I would chime in anyway. I've been to conferences with similar menus and what I do is arrange for low-carb alternatives well in advance. Telling the arrangers that you have dietary restrictions for medical reasons makes a big difference. In lieu of the typical continental fare try asking for cottage cheese or hard boiled eggs. Lunches and dinners shouldn't be a problem for them to work out. As you are paying for the food you sure ought to be able to eat it! I also pack nuts and string cheese, peanut butter and low carb tortillas as backup food just in case. Good luck next time.0

Linda 860 has excellent suggestions...Just learning how to post...sorry!0

These are excellent suggestions. I'm on the road a lot and have experienced this. I tell the hotel that I'm highly allergic to certain foods, and they always help me with a proper alternative. It's not a lie, I break out in fat (OK, so it's not really an allergy...)0
