At what point should I get worried?

I'm 3 weeks post-op from VSG. For the past two days I have been extremely nauseated to the point where even a sip of water brings on a bout of dry heaves. I'm supposed to be on soft foods but decided to go back to liquids to see if that would help (like my pouch was irritated from something I ate) but it has not.

So at what point should I be worried about this or is this just one of things that will pass on its own?

Definately warrents a call to your doc! My doc said anything outside of what we have told you to expect warrents a call to at least have a conversation of what you are experiencing. That is what they are there for.

Are you on any acid reflux/ stomach acid reliever medications? My doctor had me leave the hospital with a prescription for prilosec (spelling?). I take 2 pills twice a day and that keep my acid/ nausea down. I would venture to say that maybe the problem because about a month after my surgery my prescription ran out and I was off the medication for only 2 days until I got a refill (not knowing that my medication was the same exact thing as the one they sell at the drug store) I was constantly nauseous and felt like I had something burning in my throat. I am supposed to be on the medication at least for the first year until the stomach acids adjust.

But fyi if that if that is the cause of your nausea know that prilosec and those meds take a few days before the work, but once they do its a godsend lol.

    Good luck

Did they test you for hiatal hernia before the surgery? They did that for me, and because of that, I was not a candidate for VSG. I had RNY instead and had a hiatal hernia repair done. No nausea or stomach problems at all. If your trouble continues definitely contact your doctor. Hope it all improves soon for you!

Stephanie, I am sorry to hear you are having issues. I would definitely call your doctor if you have not done so already. You should not be feeling that poorly! I hope that this passes quickly for you and that you will get back to feeling better soon!
  • I have an appointment this afternoon, I will keep you all posted. I have been taking my acid reflux meds as indicated and my surgeon did let me know that she repaired a hiatal hernia while she was in there.

Oh, good! I'm glad to hear that they can get you in. It's always better to be safe than sorry!
  • So I'm being admitted overnight to rehydrate and to check out my gallbladder. I'll keep you updated.

I am so glad you went. Hopefully some hydration will set things right, but if its the gallbladder, keep me posted. I will be thinking of you.
  • So they removed my gallbladder this afternoon. Another surgery so soon is not fun at all! My surgeon says this happens with about 30% of bariatric patients. The quick weight loss throws the gall bladder out of wack, and nearly 30 pounds in 3 weeks was super fast. If all goes well, i should be able to go home tomorrow. Thank you all for your concern and support.

Thanks for the update! I hope you feel better soon.
  • Started vomiting again yesterday. Went to surgeon today and she did more labs and is sending me to gastroenterologist to possibly be scoped.

I seemed to vomit some of each meal forever but it settled eventually!
First I found out I was lactose intolerant & it helped to cut out the lactose. Then it was a case of sticking with certain foods that seemed to be ok & adding in others slowly. It worked out eventually but never been so sick in my life.....!!
  • UPDATE

So I had an endoscopy today, they found a slight stricture so he stretched out my pouch a bit. There was also some irritation that they biopsied.

It's not really helped so far.

It would be one thing if I only vomited after I ate, then I could test out if it was a specific food or if I was eating too much(although I don't see how that can be possible). But I feel nauseous and dry heave, all day, regardless if I have consumed anything or not.

    This is getting really frustrating.

I'm sorry to hear this. Do you have an appointment for a follow-up, or more tests?
  • I'm supposed to follow up with the gastroenterologist in a couple weeks. I'm not really sure where I'm at with the surgeon. She wanted to follow up again after I saw the gastroenterologist...
