Hurt back, need exercise suggestions

I have a history of back issues but it has been 2 years since I have had any problems. Then this morning, I felt a familiar twinge and now my lower back has been getting increasingly worse throughout the day.

I am working on trying to keep stretching every hour or so to try to keep it from tightening up too badly but it is still an issue. It is my lower back. It is tight and if I turn the wrong way or bend the wrong way, it locks up and sends a shooting pain through me.

It usually takes about a week to go away and I don't want to fall way behind in my fitness goals. What are some exercises that would be good to do?

  • I have similar issues ever since damaging a tendon near my lower spine.
Unfortunately, every Doctor, Trainer, Physiotherpast and Sports therapist has told me to rest and take painkillers until the pain has gone.

However when you're better, try working on strengthening the muscles around the area. This will eventually reduce the frequency of your twinges.

Whenever my back starts to bother me I take a hot yoga class. The combo of stretching and the heat really help me get my back back into shape.

Keep it simple but still getting a workout. Walk can help relieve stress on your back at a steady pace. Lots of stretching, yoga (search on utube), pilates and any mat exercise will get your heart rate to 130!
  • I have back issues too and from my personal experience I have discovered.....
Walk, but avoid inclines when at your worst
    DON"T work through the pain
    Yoga does help
most important.....strengthen your core, this supports your lower back!
I find crunches painful, but if I use a fitball it's all good.

Also if you have trouble laying flat, use a rolled up towel or yoga mat under your thighs, as close to your butt as you can get it.
