J.J. Virgin's Drop 7 Foods to feel better

So I came across this program on PBS of a woman named J.J. Virgin who is a medical researcher and nutritionist. She experimented with people who have symptoms very close to IBS along with migraines, fatigue, muscle ache etc. This group stopped eating the following 7 foods just for 2 weeks and showed a remarkable difference in their health.

- corn
- sugar
- gluten
- peanuts
- eggs
- soy
- dairy

I truly am a believer that my certain IBS symptoms are food allergy related. I have been tested for food allergies and have a wheat, egg yolk, vanilly, perch, and pork allergy. So I decided to really give it a go and eat gluten free for a week and see how I feel. I also cut out my morning egg whites and any fructose. I switched from regular peanut butter to almond butter. I have still been eating everything else on the list, because with all the excess food allergies I have it is really hard to cut out fruits, vegtables, gluten, dairy, fructose, soy, etc. I would basically be living off of chicken!

The results were great! I was not nearly as bloated as I use to be. I am still trying to eat gluten free, but the sugar and dairy and not been so easy. When I do eat wheat I take a digestive enzyme to counteract the results. It is really difficult to cut out all of the above, but to try for two weeks just to see if indeed you have a food allergy could be so beneficial.

If you haven't been tested for a food allergy it might be the key to your IBS problems. I was convinced for so long that there was something "else" that the doctors were missing. Unfortunately IBS can sometimes be the "we don't know what's wrong with you" diagnosis. Worth a shot if everything else has failed! :)

Let me add this ingredient to the list that a friend pointed out:

    Carrageenan. It's very inflammatory.

My biggest issue is wheat! Corn is not the greatest for me either....I had forgotten myself and ate corn chowder every day for about a week and had such problems....took a week to really notice how awful I was feeling though.

Wheat is my biggest problem as well. I try to eat gluten free but it really is difficult, especially when a loaf of gluten free bread is $5.00! Very expensive to eat gluten free, but since it makes me feel better in the end I just buy it and cut back on the rest of my groceries.

Wheat is a big one. And as someone else mentioned, stay away from carrageenan. It's added to so many foods, it's ridiculous. Specifically, it's an intestinal inflammatory and can raise the risk of colon cancer. Read ALL labels.

Check out the FODMAPs diet (there's a book..."IBS: Free At Last" that explains it well. The major offenders for most people, especially with IBS-D are wheat, dairy (lactose), legumes (beans, lentils, chick peas, peas, soy), high amounts of fructose (this includes quite a few fruits...and with other fruits, it's really how much of it you eat).

It also explains why one day you eat an apple and you're fine and another day you eat an apple and have bloating, gas, etc. It could be that the day you ate that apple you also had bread, some beans, some dairy, other fruit, etc... fructose/specific carb overload, and your gut can't handle it.

Also, I suggest everyone get their B12 levels checked. I'm doing that this week. Some think that IBS can cause B12 deficiency, but another school of thought thinks that B12 deficiency causes IBS. Someone with pernicious anemia (B12 deficiency) may need B12 injections because their body cannot absorb it properly from foods or supplements.
