Hurrah! My doctor gets it

I have a new GP, and went to see her this morning for a medication review. She asked me about my diet. I didn't say that I did Paleo (tends to put people off if you give it a label) but I told her that I had removed grains, alcohol, dairy and processed food, and no refined sugar, and she said "oh, well that all sounds very sensible" and told me she wished all her patients with chronic conditions would listen to dietary advice, but people don't want to give up their junk food and won't accept that it might make their problems worse.

Normally I get a face of horror when I say I don't eat grains, so progress - maybe the medical profession is catching up!

Yay! I also had a Dr. tell me they thought that was a great diet, especially since I have PCOS (basically diabetes in my ovaries), she said since this diet would be excellent for a diabetic that it would do wonders for me :) There are a few enlightened medical professionals out there, I'm a massage therapist and see that things are slowly but surely turning in a more natural direction in a lot of places.

Yay! They really are catching on. My doc suggested I give up grains to see if it helped with my migraines and it did. So he said I'm not celiac, but gluten sensitive. It's nice to hear that grains don't "have to be" a foundation of a healthy diet from a doctor who previously said they were very important to health

The last time I saw my dr I mentioned that I cut out grains and she didn't say anything but I sort of felt like I had to defend myself. I am going to see a functional medical practitioner next week to deal with ongoing digestive issues so it will be interesting to see what he thinks about all this. But I am glad that some doctors are finally getting with the program. I know my mother's dr was skeptical until she saw weight loss and better test results.

My friends cardiologist actually recommend that she only eat grassfed beef!
  • The GI doc at the hospital that I see isn't as enlightened, but I do hope to go back in 3 months with a reduction in Crohns symptoms and hope that the results speak for themselves, especially as we had a big argument last time I saw him because I refused steroids. As it turns out, I haven't needed them!

My doctor doesn’t get it, so he and my cardiologist want me to eat low fat, higher carb (150+ grams). I told them that this type of diet is not supported by science and that the way I am eating is working for me. They do like my results. Since I started going towards Primal in January of 2011, and was full Primal by October of 2011, I’ve lost 40 lbs., I have been taken off Glipizide, Simvastatin (he still doesn’t like this), halved my Lopressor, off Metformin and insulin. Since going very low carb, my last A1c was 5.9 after he told me I probably wouldn’t get it under 6. My most recent blood pressures were 101/67, 102/60. 107/57, 106/62, etc. Soon, I hope to be taken off my last blood pressure med.

Your doc doesn't like that you're off Simvastatin? Why? Did you stop it earlier than his suggestion? Or does he think you should be on it forever? I've heard some people joke that it's vitamin S and everyone in this county over 40 is on it. Just wondering. These posts make me shake my head. All these health results are amazing to read.

Are they getting kickbacks from the pharmaceuticals? Sheesh. My doc would be dancing on the ceiling for you. Have you considered finding a new doc?

My docs are very happy with my results, and, if they haven’t blessed what I doing, they do accept that I am going to continue the way I am eating, just not the way I’m doing it. They accept that it works for me. I think they have to tow the party line (health plan) so they don’t get sued for practicing witch craft.

I wouldn't change because they have helped me through a lot more serious problems than weight loss. and I am grateful for that.
