Hi everyone. I'm failry new to eating this way, and for meals I do fine. I have no choice but to be gluten/corn/dairy/soy/nut/tree nut free, so its wasn't a huge deal to go totally grain free.

But I can't seem to break the sugar habit. I'll do well for a few days, and then fall hard and eat candy/pop/etc. Any tips on getting through the first few weeks without the sugar? Just willpower?

pretty much you have to give your body 2 weeks to sugar detox, its hard but you have to bang through it...will power yes for sure, helps to get rod of everything in the house, do nit have anything easy access....also increasing your fat intake will help with the cravings I find and the low energy, once you get past that initial couple weeks its much easier, good luck!

Hi there, welcome to Primal/Paleo living ^_^

Personally, I find that starch trumps sugar every time. If you get the urge to eat something sugary, reach for the potatoes. Or sweet potatoes, whatever. Why? Odds are, your body's craving carbs, not just sugar. Giving into your cravings for sweets - be they candy or fruit - will make it harder to resist further cravings.
That, and sweet potatoes/white potatoes are a lot tastier, IMO, and more satiating. I'm more of a savoury guy, and love me some homemade sweet potato fries.

I just started too and it's been hard, but willpower can go a long way! I keep sweet potato fries made, and fruit cut up, and then if I start crashing and HAVE to have sugar, I have a healthy option (I keep small portions in baggies, so I feel like I'm eating "a whole bag" of something, but it helps me keep my natural sugar down too since I'm trying to lose weight) =) 1 week later, craving free for the most part! Oh and protein helps a TON, if you're full, you won't be hungry AND craving sugar, bad combo =)

when i'm craving something sweet. i eat red bell/sweet peppers. i've been allergic to raw apples for nearly 30 years so i grew up eating a pepper when my brother had an apple. some people think it's a bit odd seeing me rip a pepper open, but they taste so good and that craving goes pretty fast :)

I second the nuts and fruits... Also get rid of everythig in the house!!!! Even if it was "not a problem" before. And don't put yourself in any social sugar situations for 1 week.... for me the second week was much easier. and the third a breeze.....

Yep, mostly willpower. There's a few things you can do to help. Increase your fat intake and drink lots of water. If you feel dizzy increase your sodium. Don't let yourself get hungry that first 2 weeks. Avoid fruit for those first few weeks as they will prolong the carb withdrawal. Eat as much protein and fat as you want to satiate hunger. Worry about calories after you've gotten past the sugar cravings.

You do well for the first few days then binge because the 3rd and the 4th days are the WORST. Yikes, they're bad and you feel like dying. By the 5th day you should be over the most intense part and often you wake up to the wonder of being sugar free. You just have to remind yourself, "One more day and I'll feel great."
