Is bulking a good idea?

I just have the feeling that taking in high amounts of food (3000-4000 cal) seems more like a recipe to get fat rather than for gaining muscle. Do you guys think it would be better to take in a moderate amount of calories (2500 - 3000) and just build slowly over time rather than "bulking". Or is it better to bulk and cut?

    It can be if you're not ready or knowledgable yet about the process of getting lean. I did bulk up for a good 10 months before I got strict about my food. My calories were usually 2300 to 2900 with weight lifting 3-4 times a week. I've dropped 5.5% body fat in a little less than 2 months over the holidays and gained muscle on my under 50 grams of carbs plan. It depends on whether you want to get big but not that shapely or gradually build the muscle while looking toned/cut. I'm actually loving the carb restriction more than when I was eating indiscriminately. Check out this article on depletion:
