I know several of us are doing triathlons as well as SL - I thought we could have a thread for tips, hints and chat?

My first question - how do you manage training for both? I tend to do my cardio, then my lifts, and I'm well aware that my cardio suffers because I'm always slightly sore from lifts, while my lifts are nowhere near what should be max because I'm always doing them after running, cycling or bricks. I'm ok with this for now, since I can't get to the gym any more than 3x a week.

Well when I was lifting and doing cardio, I felt full of energy, but knackered by Thursday...so changed it down to just lifting for 3 weeks. (still knackered haha!) Until I get my new bike. And this week, am going to do a combo week again. My cardio I do separately (different day, especially if it is a full hour of running, swimming or cycling)....so this week will be a 3 day lift week (heavy but not at my max where I ended last year, slightly lighter and between 5 - 8 reps instead for 3 sets) plus one day of pure cardio...I do cycle 30 plus miles per week in any case, but need to keep my running and swimming mileage up at this point. Will also cross train for endurance on the indoor rower. If I run or do cardio on lift days, I always run home after lifts, not before, otherwise I feel way to whacked to lift heavy, if at all...

    I lift MWF
    run T Th Sa
    cycle T Th
    formal swim lessons on Sat
trying something new this week by practicing breathing & strokes on M W after lifting

I'm having trouble fitting it in because the lifting is taking over when it shouldn't since the Tri training is my priority. I just didn't imagine falling in love with barbells as I have

xidia. what kind of bike are you getting ? I did some looking around and decided on a TREX but now am having 2nd thoughts. I plan to buy a bike with my bonus check in March so I have a few weeks

This is my first year as a triathlete. <-- that still sounds funny because I haven't started cycling yet and it's my first time swimming formally, ever!

I do a big run one day a week, swim one day a week, and do speed work on the treadmill for a mile or two on my lifting days. I consider lifting a HUGE boon to my racing, so I don't really worry about whether I feel like it detracts from my workouts on the regular. Before major races, I will deload or rest from lifting.

I don't have tons of time for working out, so that's the best plan I've come up with. I try to lift three times a week, but if it's only twice, I don't get myself worked up. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Great idea to start this thread!

Yep, I have to keep reminding myself about this too, plenty of weeks to train until the summer, but I want to do it all now...might explain why I feel so tired all the time at the weekends....gah!

The first indoor tri I'm eying is at the end of April... I am hoping to get my bike by the end of March, so I have no idea whether I will be ready. I keep assuming that riding a bike is going to be as easy to pick back up as... riding a bike  ... but I'm probably going to be in for a big surprise.

The sitbone soreness the first few times! I haven't ridden my bike since August, and when I went to my first spin class in Dec. my sit bones hurt for a week. They normally hurt a bit in the Spring, but I ease into it. Couple miles here and there and build up. If you haven't been in a saddle for a while you might want to find a spin class or two to get your butt ready. That way you can actually train when you get your bike instead of crying after 10 minutes.

I just popped into this thread because I think a sprint tri would be so much fun. My aunt is a big triathlete lady (did international ironmans,) until her shoulder got hurt in a non fitness related setting. I saw her over thanksgiving and she assured me I could still tri even if all I could do was dog paddle. Since I don't have to learn how to swim like a grown up it made me think more seriously about them. I look forward to reading everyone's wisdom.

Oh my gods the bike hurts when you first sit back on it. Seriously do some cycling just to build up some tolerance in your seatbones!
