Another Newbie :)

Hi all, I am 27 & I was diagnosed with PCOS at age 21. I struggle daily with nearly all the symptoms, the only one they've never been able to find is actual cysts on my ovaries. Which really shocks me because of how severely irregular my cycles are. Right after I was diagnosed the doctor put me on Metformin. I was on it for about 6 months but it didn't do anything for me at all, good or bad. In July 2009 I got engaged and in December I started seeing a new doctor. We went ahead and started Prometrium & Clomid since I would be getting married in a few months (we were planning for April 2010 & wanted to get the ball rolling baby wise LOL.) I figured it would take several rounds since the Met didn't do anything for me. What a shock when I took a HPT on March 7th 2010 and got a positive! LOL! We still were planning to get married in April, but I struggled from the week after I found out I was pregnant, until the day I gave birth. My pregnancy was one for the record books. Hyperemesis Gravidarum (SEVERE "morning" sickness...more like 24/7 sickness), dehydration, dizzy spells, you name it. I was in such bad shape that I was admitted into the hospital (for the first time in my entire life) at my very FIRST OB visit! Awful! My daughter was born November 2nd, 2010 and was perfectly healthy despite all my issues, thank the Lord.

Anyway now that all that is over with, I am trying my hardest to figure out how to control this on my own without medical intervention. I have not seen a doctor PCOS related since I was trying to get pregnant (no longer have insurance coverage or else I probably would). I was able to lose 27lbs from February - May 2012 by taking Adipex (I know, I know) and exercise. After I stopped taking it, it seemed like I couldn't lose any more on my own no matter what I did. I had gotten down to 180 from 207, and only gained about 5 of it back. I went back to the dr at the end of January to get started back on it to try to lose more since nothing I was doing was working. I've lost 6lbs since starting back.

What I want is to be able to do it on my OWN. I don't want to have to "rely" on a pill to help me. My trouble is, I just can't seem to figure out what to do to make that happen. I joined this group in hopes of finding others like myself who understand what I'm going through and maybe I could learn what others are doing that works and maybe it'll work for me as well. Sorry this was so long but I thought if maybe you all knew a little about my back story it would help! I look forward to learning from you ladies!

Welcome!!! I have been a member of MFP for a while, but didn't realize they had forums like this until just last week! I have added a couple of friends on here that struggle with PCOS, and now I'm more careful to work out and not go over my calorie count each day. I would suggest this first!

This is the first time that I am really making an effort to lose weight and get control of my life. I have been researching different diets and everyone that I've found for PCOS is just low, low carbs. In addition, I have finally come to grips that I am just going to have to be one of those girls that has to be active each day. (I say be active instead of "work out".) So now my goal is to stay under my calorie count each day, do something for at least 30 minutes to get my heart rate up, and eat as few carbs as I can stand each day. My goal each month is to simply lose 1 pound a month. I think this is a good goal because every time I've tried to lose a pound a week, I've got discouraged from failure and quit.

So... (sorry to ramble) My advice would be to eat as good as you can each day, be active each day, and set really low goals for weight loss because women with PCOS cannot lose weight that quick. Oh and add some friends! It's like the new facebook for me.. checking everyone's status and trying to make sure when my daily eating and working status is posted that it represents something I'm happy with.

    :0) Hope this helps!
