Low thyroid?

Hi All! I am new here. My holistic practitioner just told me that my thyroid's a little low,so I of course start researching like crazy and found this group. My question is once your thyroid is off, will it ever be "normal" again? My doc always says my thyroid is fine, but I do have lack of energy and terribly dry skin and in the last few months, I've lost a bunch of hair. I'm also gluten intolerant. Wondering if I need a new doc? And if so, if anybody is from the Milwaukee area, please let ,me know if you have one. TIA!!!

I also have Low Thyroid and YES, you should see a DR. Low Energy, dry skin, sleep problems. I never lost any Hair, though.
Good luck.

You need to see an Endocrinologist. You need to find out the root of the cause of low thyroid production... In my case, I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.
If you don't get it under control your symptoms will become worse. Google all of the symptoms of thyroid issues, think about that plus the ones they don't list.
You can live with this disease if taken seriously. I cannot express this enough.. Please find a different Dr.0 -
Hi there-
I was hyperthyroid with Graves disease. I am now Hypothyroid. A website I found really helped me was www.stopthethyroidmadness.com. Please find yourself a good endocrinolgist who will not only treat your thyroid but will also take into consideration was caused your thyroid to go low (autoimmune disease, adrenal fatique and such)
Good luck to you!

You do need to find a good thyroid doctor, but I wouldn't assume an endo is the way to go as they often just focus on diabetes. Is your holistic practitioner able to prescribe meds? Will they test your free T3 and free T4 levels?
I would definitely not go back to the doctor who said your thyroid was "fine", especially since you have some symptoms.
You want to find someone who will test your free T3 and free T4 levels (your actual thyroid hormones) and not just your TSH (which is a pituitary hormone). You also want them to listen to how you are feeling.
Also, always make sure to grab a copy of your thyroid labs for your records, and don't just accept the doctor's interpretation of those labs ("fine", "normal", etc).
It's unfortunately unlikely that your thyroid will ever regulate itself, but finding out the root cause is useful. See if your doctor will test you for Hashimoto's antibodies, to see if it's autoimmune in nature. With proper meds and proper treatment you can be just fine.0 -
From someone who has just recently been diagnosed with Hashimoto's you'll want to pick the "right" doc for you. Reading up on it helps too. There is some great information and knowledgeable folks here. I've been reading some of Mary J. Shomon's books which are also informative. There are many good authors out there. As for a doctor if you decide to change I'd start with looking up the endocrinologists in your area by visiting your insurance providers website (most have them) and see who is in the network and there should be a doctor profile with what they specialize in, background etc. Then see if they have websites with further information on them. It'll give you some insight to them and their practices. Most insurance providers allow for a 30-60 minute initial visit with a new doctor so do your research, have questions ready and make sure you get as many answers as possible. Remember your interviewing them just as much as they are seeking to understand your needs...... GL! Hang in there!0

Thanks everyone!!! I have started asking around for doctor referals. It's kind of scary to take this step, because if I'm right, it sounds like a lifetime concern. It also sounds like from what I've read that my holistic practitioner won't be able to "fix" this. She does not prescribe meds and from what I've read, natural remedies can only do so much. If someone has had a different experience, please let me know. Thanks again!0
