what to do when you're being told this is wrong..

I need some help, I just started lifting heavy within the past 2 weeks and I keep getting resistance from my family on lifting heavy. they don't want me to 'get big' and say that lifting light weights with more reps is the way to lose fat... I know this isn't true with the research I've done with em2wl, new rules of lifting, go kaleo and countless other sources but of course when I go to defend what I'm doing I can't remember everything... Do any of you have any good articles off hand that you could link me to so I can show them? or just some reassurance for me lol I'm going to continue lifting but it's discouraging when I'm told what I'm doing is wrong.... Ugh

side note, I am overweight and have a decent amount to lose so should i keep up with the lifting?

Well I don't know what would be appropriate for you to say. they are wrong, NROLFW has some great science that even an neandrathal can understand. You will lose fat with any kind of lifting, IMHO, I did...but the way to really do it is the way SL5x5 recommends, increasing the weight and challenging the muscles. NROLFW discusses that too...

So for me, I usually tell the nay sayers to go F**k themselves, go educate themselves and when they have the science to back up their claims they can come discuss it with me. Most people have learned I dont' like being told what to do..so they don't bother...

Or you can take the route that a lot of my friends RECOMMEND I do..which is to smile, nod and go do what you want to do anyway.

Either way, your body, your rules...and yeah, you're doing it right...you can't argue with science...unless Dr. Oz's lips are moving, you can argue with that *kitten* anyday.

Don't let anyone shift your gaze from the prize.

I also get this from my family all the time. Like the poster above I say *kitten* them too. This is my body and I know this is working for me and they cannot stop me. I give my family the choice to do what they want to do, I do not make them lift, why should they feel that they can make me 'not' lift.

For information, I have been doing SL 5x 5 for just 5 weeks - I have lost 5 lbs during that time, lost body fat% and gained LBM%. I have also lost 1.5 inches from my hips, 1 inch from my waist - even at my age my boobs are 'less floppy' more 'spritley' and my batwing arms are disappearing. My knees have stopped aching and my hip mobility which was pretty bad is getting better all the time. I do cardio on my treadmill on non lifting days and try to stay at 60% of max heart rate to protect muscles - whereas I used to walk at 4 mph, then 4.5 mph, the other day I had to walk at 5mph to keep it in the right zone. I can feel I am stronger around the house, I suddenly have a 'lighter' hoover !!!! in fact everything feels lighter.

I am so glad that I am on MFP and that I read about heavy lifting, I am just loving these results.

Just tell your family you're going to do it your way for a while, and if it doesn't work you will do it their way.

Then you go out and pick up heavy things and put them back down again.

In 6 months when you're nice and muscular without being bulky, it'll be a non-issue anyway.

Yes, keep up with the lifting! If it's fun for you and gets you motivated and moving, then do it! Just make sure you eat right and lift safely, and all will be well.

thank you! the smile and nodding is my plan..whats funny is that with them being like that it motivates me even more to stay on track so i can be an example that it does work!

You don't need to justify what you're doing to anyone, if they have advice and know best tell them to use it on themselves.

    A Picture is worth 1,000 words, http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/901608-women-lifters-i-wish-i-looked-like-these?hl=women+lifter

Also, this year's Miss America is a lifter. Would anyone dare call her bulky?

I would just turn it around, and ask for peer reviewed proof of their claims.

Do they have a physique or level of health you aspire to? If not, I'd probably say "o rly? Is that what you do?" Because... BAMFs.

There is that whole, "I do it because I love it, and it makes me feel good" thing.

In my case, I have been lucky in that I have a very supportive family and friends. Well, most of them are. I do have one that insists that I need to scale back my calories and eat NOTHING but tuna or chicken for a week to "jump start" fat loss. I was like, "Do you have ANY idea how much freaking tuna I would have to eat just to make it to my BMR?" SMH. And no carbs while lifting? You gotta be kidding...and then I start spouting off the science, LOL.

The hubs is very supportive because he KNOWS how much i hate to exercise. Until this, it was something I HAD to do; a neccessary evil, if you will, in order to get back to a healthy weight. Now that I've found lifting, it's like a whole new world and something I GET to do, and look forward to it!

Maybe you could throw out there that someone needs to throw a flag on the field when you start looking all beefy and manly, LOL. Since it won't go like that, it's a safe thing to throw out there, LOL.

my family has said similar things to me about "lifting heavy". They have this idea that I'm going to look like a body builder - which is not the case.

But its been awhile now that I've been doing this, and I've actually gotten COMPLIMENTS from them on how I look. Give it time! The results will show them how wrong they are :)
