Hello! I'm an 18 year old ballet dancer. While I have never actually been big or overweight, I have often been the "fat" one among my peers in the ballet world. Because of this I have been on a lot of different diet and exercise regimens, some healthy and some not so much. I also have a bit of a complex about eating in front of my bosses and teachers, because they are usually the ones who are telling me I need to slim down, around other dancers who are thin, and sometimes around my parents. They have had to deal with a lot of my struggles with my weight, and sometimes go overboard in their efforts to be supportive. I don't want them to think that I have so much trouble with my body because I'm not trying. I have had a couple short bulimic- type phases, but haven't struggled with that in over a year. Anyway, I think constantly having my diet so restricted by myself and other people, and still never being "thin enough" led me to give up on myself and develop my problem with binging. I am really determined to be healthy and have a normal relationship with food. I still have to watch my weight, as I am entering the proffesional world for the first time this year, and being thin is necessary for having a job, but I would like to go about it in a healthy way. No more crash diets, hiding food or purging. Just counting calories, some extra cardio, and getting rid of my compulsive eating and binges for good. I know that I am happiest when I am active and eating clean, and when I am happiest my dancing is at it's best. Tonight is the end of my fifth binge free day... Yayyy! Anyway, sorry for the excessively long introduction. I would love to find some friends who have similar emotional issues with food and binging! I'm always here to support you all as well!

I don't envy you your career choice. It is renowned for being a breeding ground for eating disorders. However, there are also many dancers who become stronger and better dancers via strength training and a good, healthy diet. There was a topic yesterday somewhere in general in which someone posted images of a very strong and healthy, not thin, ballet dancer who seems to be quite well known. I would certainly not compare yourself to thinner dancers. Being thinner does not necessarily equal a better dancer as you need strength to dance well. The best way to break out of the binging is to make sure you are eating enough and getting the right balance of protein, fat and carbs then you might find you do not crave as badly. The more you try and maintain a weight that is too low for you, the harder it will be to prevent binges, as I found myself. Building strength and a little muscle will allow you to maintain a strong and lean physique and still be able to eat a decent amount to fuel everything.0
