Pull-ups w/ resistance bands

I know quite a few people on here have been working on trying to do pull-ups. A lot of you have mentioned using resistance bands to do them. I am thinking of purchasing some, and I just have no idea what to get. My gym seems to only have the kind with handles. I tried using the shortest I could find a looping it over the bar and through the handle. I put my foot through the handle and tried pulling up. I'm not sure if using your knee is better, but of course that wasn't an option because the band was so long. It still did not give me enough resistance and was too long. I'm only 5' 2" also. I have looked online, and I am not sure what type of band to get and what resistance. I currently use the assisted pull-up machine. I put it on the setting that gives me 40 pounds of assistance, and I weigh about 115. Any suggestions?

I bought my resistance bands online at rubberbanditz.com. The site has a chart that tells you what size of band you need based on how much you weigh and how many pullups you can currently do. I spent about $40, and I just loop the band over my powerrack when I need it. I'd say it was well worth the money!

By the way, I'm 5'5, and I have to stand on my weight bench and then put either my knee or my foot into the bands to start the motion because the bands do not come down very far when not stretched. But the resistance is great and the first time I did 3 sets of 5 reps (when I had managed zero reps before).

if you can't make the band work, you can do negatives (where you put yourself in position from the top and slowly lower yourself) and that should make a big difference.

Thanks, this makes it easy, but wow the prices--$25 for basically a big rubber band! I've tried doing negatives, but the pull-up bar at the gym is really high for me. Even with the stool they have for you to use, I can't get above the bar!

Can you get above it if you do a little hop? Alternately can you just pull yourself above it from that height? Allllternately - get a doorway bar for your home, but then you're spending money so you could just as soon get a resistance band I suppose.

I think I have a way that might make the resistance bands with handles that they have at the gym work. I was reading about people using them with caribiner clips. If I am remembering right I think there might be some kind of clips on the pull-up bar at the gym, but I didn't really notice them because they were attached to some ab straps. I'll have to see if I can unhook the ab straps, and use one clip for each handle. This should make it not as long as when I looped it through the handle. I'll have to check it out tomorrow.
