SSSI withdrawal & insomnia

Hello I joined MFP on NYE and am really pleased I did. I like the fact that it doesn't just focus on losing weight but on keeping your whole body healthy. My aim this year is to be much more body-aware and treat my body & mind with more respect.

I stopped taking 20mg Citalopram (I think its called Lexapro in US) about 17 days ago. The first two weeks I felt surprisingly well - whenever I've felt jittery I've headed to the gym and the release of endorphins afterward has got me through it. I've also been trying to follow the recommendations in a book I'm currently reading 'The De-stress Diet' (C.Watts and A.Magee) and have changed my diet to more lean protein, seeds, veg etc.

However the last few nights I have been getting insomnia; yesterday night was particularly bad as I was tossing turning with the nonsensical, repetitive, semi-dreams I used to get when at the height of my stress/anxiety. I'm in a completely different situation now to the one I was in when I had the stress (quit the evil job to go freelance and now have zero stress in my life :) ) so I know that these must only be withdrawal symptoms - but I am not sure how best to deal with them.

The De-Stress book suggests Magnesium supplements with evening meal, which I am going to try tonight, with a glass of milk! Have also ordered some good quality Omega 3 supplements and B vitamins.

Would be really grateful to hear if any other MFP users have gone through similar symptoms and have any recommendations. I've been getting a little jittery wondering if it will happen again tonight.

Thanks in advance

Thank you for posting this. I take 20 mg of Citalopram (Celexa in the US) and I am hoping to get off it soon. I am taking a lot of new meds for ADHD now and I just don't want to take so many pills. I was wondering what withdrawal will be like and I had hoped that, since I was taking a small dose, it woudn't be bad. Even thougn every person will experience withdrawal differently, I'm glad to know your experience.

Sorry I don't have any wise words for you, but thank you for telling us about your experience.
  • I recently came off citaloprham but in stages eg 20mg a month then 10 then 5 every other day, with no side effects at all, Good luck

Well, first let me congratulate you for making it through the withdrawl. I spent two years taking 20mg Citalopram, and although it was a "lifesaver" for me, I have been trying to wean off of it for just over 3 moths now. I hope to be completely off of it within a few weeks time.

I am also having a tough time getting to sleep. I take melatonin about an hour before bedtime and try to have a hot bath with epsom salts.

    :)
